Kliewer, retired missionary to the Cheyenne Indians who died in his sleep at his home Wednesday morning, Feb. 3. Services were held last Saturday afternoon at the First Mennonite church. Henry J. Kliewer, son of John P. and Aganetha (Foth) Kliewer, was born in Russia on April 9, 1871. At the age of three his parents with the entire family migrated to America. They located about ten miles east of Newton. It was in this vicinity that he spent his childhood and youth. When but a lad of eight years his mother's death brought a change in his life. In spite of many difficulties he secured his Education in the public schools, and later at the Halstead Seminary and Academy. He was baptized on May 26, 1890 and became a member of the Gnadenberg Mennonite church. It was his early desire to become a missionary. A few days after graduating from Halstead Seminary, he was on his way to Oklahoma to fill the position of a teacher in the mission school at Darlington and Cantonment. After a few years in that capacity he went to Canada where he also taught. Ill health necessitated his return to a warmer climate so he continued teaching in Kansas. After these experiences he felt prepared to enter active mission work, and was ordained as a missionary by the Rev. Rodolphe Petter May 15, 1898. He answered the call of the Foreign Mission Board to start a new station among the Red Moon Indians near Hammon, Oklahoma. On August 31, 1899 he was united in marriage to Christina Horsch and they founded their first home at the Red Moon Mission station. Of the five children born into the home four are still living. He was ordained as elder April 13, 1902. He has seen forty years of active missionary service among the Indians of Oklahoma. All those who are acquainted with Mission history will know that such an undertaking is connected with much prayer and full consecration to the work. He must have had discouragements, but among his papers we read, "The Lord has guided and blessed us during these forty years with the Indians." Because of his wife's ill health he retired to Newton in 1936 where he has since made his home. He transferred his membership to the First Mennonite church Nov. 27, 1937. He passed away peacefully while asleep early in the morning of Feb. 3, 1943. He is survived by his wife; three daughters (Martha), Mrs. A. G. Linscheid, of Cleveland, Ohio; (Linda), Mrs. R. van der Smissen, Ely, Nevada; (Ruth) Mrs. P. R. Linscheid, Attica, Kansas; one son, Milton Kliewer, Bartlesville, Okla.; four grandchildren and three sisters, Mrs. Agnes Ewert, Drake, Saskatchewan; Mrs. J. J. Schmidt, Newton; Mrs. J. H. Harms, Newton. Besides the immediate family he will be missed by his fellow missionaries and many friends in Newton and elsewhere. Funeral services were held Saturday from the First Mennonite church with the following ministers officiating, Rev. J. E. Entz, Dr. A. Warkentin, Dr. P. A. Penner and Dr. P. H. Richert. Mr. Paul Kliewer sang, "Near To The Heart of God" and "My Task". He was accompanied by Miss Anna Marie Bartsch, organist, and Miss Edith Entz, pianist. The pallbearers were, Rev. W. C. Voth, Rev. F. J. Isaac, Rev. S. J. Goering, G. H. Willms, T. E. Claassen and Rev. J. M. Jantzen. Interment was in the Greenwood cemetery under the direction of Dick A. Morris of the Morris Mortuary. (MWR 11 Feb 1943 p. 3, 5) Missionar Heinrich J. Kliewer, Sohn von Joh. P. und Aganetha Foth Kliewer, wurde am 9. April, 1871 in Russland geboren und kam in 1874 mit der Familie nach Kansas, wo sie etwa 10 Meilen Ost von Newton ansiedelten. Hier brachte Heinrich seine Jugendjahre zu. Seine Mutter starb als er 8 Jahre alt war. Trotz Hindernissen eignete er sich eine Volksschulbildung und dann auch weitere Kenntnisse in dem Halstead Seminar und der Fortbildungsschule an. Am 26. Mai, 1890 ward er getauft und Glied der Gnadenberg Mennonitengemeinde. Früh im Leben fühlte er den Drang Missionar zu werden und einige Tage nachdem er von der Halstead Fortbildungsschule graduierte, war er auf dem Wege nach Oklahoma (damals Indian territory) um in der Missionsschule zu Darlington und später zu Cantonment zu lehren. Nach einigen Jahren des Dienstes ging er nach Canada und lehrte auch dort. Geschwächte Gesundheit veranlasste seine Rückkehr nach wärmerem Klima, und er lehrte dann in Kansas. Nach diesen Erfahrungen fühlte er bereit um aktive Missionsarbiet aufzunehmen, und war am 5. Mai, 1898 von Missionar R. Petter ordiniert, und folgte dem Rufe der Behörde für Aeussere Mission eine Missionsstation unter den Red Moon Indianern zu Hammon, Okla. zu eröffnen. Am 31. August, 1899 heiratete er Frl. Christina Horsch und sie gründeten ihr erstes Heim zu Hammon. Von ihren fünf Kindern leben noch vier. Am 13. April, 1902 ward er als Aeltester ordiniert. Er hat einen 40 jährigen aktiven Missionsdienst unter den Indianern in Oklahoma durchlebt. Da seine Gattin nicht gesund war, trat er in 1936 in den Ruhestand und sie wohnten seither in Newton. Seine Gemeindegliedschaft übertrug er an die Erste Mennonitengemeinde in Newton am 27. Nov., 1937. Er starb früh am Morgen des 3. Febr. 1943 während er schlief. Es überleben ihn seine Gattin; drei Töchter: Martha Frau A. G. Linscheid, Cleveland, Ohio; Linda, Frau Roland van der Smissen, Ely, Nevada; Ruth, Frau P. R. Linscheid, Attica, Kansas; ein Sohn, Milton Kliewer, Bartlesville, Okla. und 4 Enkel; dazu 3 Schwestern: Frau Agnes Ewert, Drake, Sask.; Frau J. J. Schmidt, Newton, Kansas; und Frau J. H. Harms, Newton, Kansas. Die Begräbnisfeier fand in der Ersten Mennonitenkirche statt; und es dienten die Prediger J. E. Entz, A. Warkentin, P. A. Penner und P. H. Richert, und Paul Kliewer sang.
