He was born in Norwich, June 12, 1820, and regenerated September 1835, under the ministry of Rev. William Livesey, by whom he was baptized. His mother, Mrs. Thankful Hempstead, was highly devout, and seems to have accomplished much for the moral and religious destiny of her family. He was born in Norwich, June 12, 1820, and regenerated September 1835, under the ministry of Rev. William Livesey, by whom he was baptized. His mother, Mrs. Thankful Hempstead, was highly devout, and seems to have accomplished much for the moral and religious destiny of her family. His father died, leaving him a child, and early in life he entered upon type-setting. In his nineteenth year he, in company with Rev. Frank Bill, started on foot for the Wesleyan Academy at Wilbraham, Mass., where by strict economy, together with some aid derived from teaching and preaching, he prosecuted his studies to a point beyond preparation for college. "Returning to his native city, he preached several months at Bozrah, Connecticut, after which he was employed by Rev. Phineas Crandall, Presiding Elder at Barre, Mass. In Dec 1842, he was removed to take charge of Lunenburg, in the same State, where Rev. S. Heath, the appointed minister, had become occupied with Millerism. "Dec 6, 1842, he married Miss Hannah E. Merrill, daughter of Rev. Joseph A. Merrill, a lady of uncommon adaptation for the idiosyncrasies of ministerial life, of great energy of characted, and high domestic worth." Obituary from Boston Herald, December 30, 1862, Pg. 2, Col. 2: ". . . He was born in Norwich, Conn., in 1820, and lost his father when but a child. In his early life he became a printer, and before reaching his majority, partly through the influence of his mother, a devote Christian and greatly venerated by her children, and also from an intuitive perception and belief that such was his duty, he experienced religion, and at the age of nineteen entered the Wesleyan Academy, at Wilbraham. Being in indigent circumstances he taught school in the winter season to defray the expenses of obtaining a liberal education. He is remembered by those with whom he was than associated as a devout and pious young man. In 1842 he took charge of the Methodist church at Lunenburg, and joined the Methodist Conference in 1843. Since then he has been settled in Milford and East Boston, and was for six years the beloved and respected Chaplain of the State Prison. He was last settled in Watertown. He sought the Chaplaincy of the 29th regiment, feeling such to be a duty, and joined it at Fortress Monroe, last Spring. He followed the fortunes of the regiment through the Peninsula campaign, and after the army reached Harrison's Landing came home on a furlough, his health being impaired. After a brief respite he returned, and has since, as before, been considered by the soldiers an estimable and beloved companion and friend. He died on Sunday, the 21st inst., at Gen. Sumner's headquarters, of congestive fever, at the age of 40 years. He is eulogized as a man of strong sense and sterling integrity. He was always diligent and studious, loved good looks and good men. He was possessed of much excellence of character, and both aged and young respected and loved him as a minister of the Gospel of Christ. His remains will be interred in the burying ground at Wilbraham, today."
