Read More	The Rev. Herbert H. Graening, 103, Beatrice, died Sunday afternoon, Dec. 18, 2005, at the Good Samaritan Center in Beatrice. He was born March 10, 1902, in Denver, Iowa, graduated high school from the Wartburg Academy in Clinton, Iowa, attended Wartburg College in Clinton, Iowa, and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill., in 1924. He received his Bachelor of Divinity Degree at Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa, in 1927, was ordained as a Lutheran Minister on June 12, 1927, and received a Master of Arts degree from the University of Iowa in 1934, having majored in German and minored in history. He and Irma Schulz were married June 29, 1927, in Davenport, Iowa. She died July 11, 2004. He ministered and lived in many communities, including Manchester and Iowa City, Iowa, Wyoming, Iowa, Mobile, Ala., Cleveland, Ohio, and Ottumwa, Iowa, before he and his wife moved to Beatrice in 1957. He was a 1st lieutenant and chaplain in the U.S. Army from May 23, 1941, and was stationed at Camp Forrest in Tullahoma, Ten., with the 129th Regiment, 33rd Division, until he received a medical discharge on April 10, 1942. In his 75 years of ministry, he served 54 congregations, either as parish minister or as a supply and visitation pastor before he retired in 2002 at the age of 100 years. He served as chaplain at the Beatrice State Home (now the Beatrice State Developmental Center) and the Martin Luther Home, and published a book entitled, “The Chaplain as Pastor of Institutionalized Mentally Retarded,” in 1968. He was recognized as a Fellow of the American Association of Mental Deficiency and retired from the Beatrice State Home in 1970. He subsequently served as chaplain at The Lutheran Hospital and the Mennonite Hospital (now Beatrice Community Hospital and Health Center). He was a charter member and served on the church board of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Beatrice from 1965-1969, and had been a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Beatrice since 1969 and served this congregation in numerous capacities, including as communion assistant. He also served many congregations and nursing homes in the Beatrice area from 1957 until he retired in 2002 and enjoyed gardening and working with youth. Survivors: sister, Erna Orth of Dubuque, Iowa; nieces, Mary Orth of Dubuque, Naomi Rowley of Baileys Harbor, Wis., Roma Brown and Phyllis Jones, both of Davenport, Iowa, and Marilyn McKnight of Tampa, Fla.; nephews, the Rev. Norman Wente of Minneapolis, Minn., the Rev. James Wente of Pittsburgh, Pa., and David Wente of Solvang, Calif.; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilhelm and Sophie (Lobeck) Graening; wife, Irma Graening (July 11, 2004); sisters, Esther Graening and Martha Wente. Funeral: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, St. John Lutheran Church, Sixth and Washington streets, Beatrice, the Rev. David Kramer, the Rev. Joann Kramer and the Rev. Damon Laker officiating. Burial: Evergreen Home Cemetery, Beatrice. Visitation on Tuesday from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. at Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel, Sixth and Washington streets, Beatrice, and at the church one hour preceding services on Wednesday. Family prayer service: 10:15 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Memorials established to the Grant in Aid (Higher Education) Fund at the St. John Lutheran Church in Beatrice with Eugene and Caroline Bargman in charge.
