Forbes, who died at Fonda June 4, 1896, was buried in this city today, the remains arriving on the 11:45 train. The funeral services were held at the home of his son, John Forbes of Fonda, and were conducted by Rev. B.E. Flickinger, who also had charge of the services at the cemetery here. The pall bearers were Rev. J.E. Cummings, Rockwell City; Rev. A.L. Berry, Churdan; Rev. Fred J. Tower, Glidden; and Rev. A.F. Ernst, R.E. Osborne and S.H. Johnston of this city. Hugh William Forbes was born at Delton?, Ohio, December 20, 1826. On July 25, 1849, he married Mary Broadwell, and she continued a faithful helper to him in his work, and a loving mother in the home until December 11, 1883, when during their residence in this city she died and was buried here. Of this union the children that remain are Walter L., married to Jennie Frantz, and living at Montour, Tama county; Mary R, married to Dr. W.H. Lane, Miller, South Dakota; John B., married Emma Woodring, residing at Fonda; Erwin M., married to Jennie Badger, living at Victor, Colorado; and Dora L., married to D.A. Castleman, and living at Colorado Springs, Colorado. In his early ministry he was the first Presbyterian minister to preach at Dixon, Illinois. In that state he ministered also to the churches of Cambridge and Hanover, and in Iowa he ministered with fidelity to a number of churches, and moved to Carroll in 1882. Sometime previous to this duty he began to suffer from a lung trouble that seriously affected the power of his voice for public address and after the death of his wife in 1883 he made his home with his children in Nebraska, Colorado, South Dakota, Newell and Fonda, Iowa, and preached only as he had special opportunity, his last work being one week of special meetings in January last at Miller, South Dakota. He was a faithful home missionary, a man highly esteemed and greatly beloved for the gentle and attractive elements of character he possessed. He leaves many loving friends and his children will ever hold him in loving remembrance.
