Description	:	Rev. John Graening, was born June 7,1846 in Wuestemark in Meckienburg Schwerin, Germany. He was brought to the United States in 1857, by his parents Heinrich Graening and Marie Kaben. The family first resided in Chicago, Illinois, the family removed to Iowa the Bremer County area, about one year later. John attended the church and school at Maxfield, Iowa and was confirmed at the age of 14 by Rev. P Kleinlein. John attended the church and school at Maxfield, Iowa and was confirmed at the age of 14 by Rev. P Kleinlein. Following his confirmation, he attended the seminary at Saint Sebald, Clayton County, Iowa. In 1867 Rev. Graening was sent to assist Pastor List, in Madison, Wisconsin. There he was a teacher in the parochial school for a short stay. In the later part of 1867 he was called to serve as assistant Pastor at the First St. John's Lutheran Church in Oregon, Ohio (then Toledo, Ohio). Where he met and felling in love with her wife Elizabeth Bitter. June 24, 1868, he was ordained into the ministry by Dr.Sigmund Fritschel at St. Sebald, Clayton County, Iowa his home church. In the later part of 1868 he was appointed Pastor at Marine City, Michigan, where he would spend the next 19 years. During the first year of this assignment he would travel 108 miles back to Oregon, Ohio (then Toledo, Ohio), once a month until Elizabeth consented to join him as his wife. The couple was married Sept 23, 1869 at First Saint John's Lutheran Church, in Oregon, Ohio (then Toledo, Ohio). In October 1886, the family moved to Monona, Iowa, where John served as pastor for the next 19 years when in 1905 he was called to serve at Maxfield, Iowa, his home church for the next 10 years. He in 1915 retired and a moved to Waverly. Iowa. His wife Elizabeth Bitter, who was born in Holland, the Netherlands and came to America first New Albany, New York for one year then the family removed to Toledo, Ohio (now Oregon, Ohio) As a couple they had three children: Dr. C. H. Graening; Mrs. George Kaiser both of Waverly and Mrs. A. G. Studier, of Chicago At the time of his death, John Graening was visiting his daughter Else Studier in Chicago, Ill, when he fell and broke his hip. He returned to Waverly to hopefully recover, he died from these injury in his home at Waverly, Iowa.
