Description	:	John P. Fox was the son of Paul (ex Fleringen, Germany)and Mary (Hagemann) Fuchs of Uniontown WA (Whitman County). He was the third of eleven children of this union. Recognizing his early interest in the priesthood, he was sent to Gonzaga for high-school and two years of college work. Recognizing his early interest in the priesthood, he was sent to Gonzaga for high-school and two years of college work. He entered the Jesuit novitiate on 21 July, 1913 before going on to study philosophy at Mount St. Michael's in Spokane. He earned his M.A. degree from Gonzaga in June of 1921. He later studied at Ona, Spain and was ordained there on 29 July 1926 at age 34. Upon his return to the USA he showed an interest in the mission work of the Jesuits and was assigned to work in Alaska in July of 1927. Here he spent the next 40+ years working in the humble villages of native Eskimos, serving each community by his dog-sled visits. His district was the Hooper Bay area, encompassing (according to Fr. Fox) an area of 300 miles by 50 miles. His dog-team numbered 9-13 dogs (see attached photo of team). Villages served (among others) were Scammon Bay, Old Chevak, Tununak, Keyaluvik, Nightmute, and Kokaklercheraramiut. Besides his spiritual work, Fr. Fox also served as a member of the Alaska Territorial Guard, rising to the rank of Captain in Nov. of 1944. In addition, he served as village "doctor", postmaster, radio operator, marriage commissioner and reindeer supervisor. In 1956 he moved to Holy Cross Mission. After serving in a variety of spiritual capacities in Alaska, Fr. Fox left Alaska in 1977 for the last time. For the next five years he resided at Gonzaga University Jesuit retirement home. During this time he was awarded the DeSmet Medal in recognition of his long years and many achievements as a missionary in Alaska. At age 91, he died at the Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane (at the time the home of Sister Louisa Hageman, a cousin). Fr. Fox is buried in the Jesuit Cemetery at Mount St. Michael's, a convenient drive from central Spokane, WA. A small, flush-mounted stone locates his burial and notes the important dates of his life in the Society of Jesus.
