In the 1870 Fowler Memoir the birth of Rev. Joseph Fowler's uncle Joseph (who became Col. Joseph Fowler, Esq. of Lebanon and East Haddam), and Rev. Joseph's father Jonathan, are confirmed by the vital records of Norwich, Conn. The 1696 death of Rev. Fowler's paternal grandfather, Jonathan Fowler, Sr., is of record in the Norwich, Conn. vital records despite probate of his estate at Windham, Conn. The town of Windham was incorporated May 12, 1692. Mohican Sachem Chief Joshua had willed the land comprising Windham to sixteen men, who mostly resided at Norwich, who in turn sold the land to planters in order to populate the new town of Windham. Whereas Jonathan's estate was probated at Windham, which at the time was under the jurisdiction of the Hartford Probate District, the likely reason is that although Jonathan Fowler, Sr. resided at Norwich, at his death he only owned property at Windham. The statement in the 1870 Fowler Memoir that Jonathan Fowler, Sr. was the ancestor "of the Fowlers of Windham County" is incorrect. Prior to the year 1814 there is no entry of the Fowler surname in any vital record of a town that was or is now part of Windham County, Conn. In the 1870 Fowler Memoir is stated the following regarding Rev. Fowler's uncle Joseph, with annotation: • ii. Joseph Fowler, b. Sept. 28, 1691 [re: Norwich VRs], m. Elizabeth Powell Jan. 8, 1712-13 [re: Lebanon VRs]; he was a magistrate and a man of worth. He was deputy from Lebanon from 1726 to 1759. He had a farm of 150 acres at Lebanon, and removed to East Haddam, 1763, where he was a "corporal" [sic Colonel] and a "constable," &c., and where he d. June 23, 1768, and his wife the same year. He had no children, but brought up and educated his nephew, Joseph, son of Jonathan, who was afterwards an eminent clergyman at East Haddam. On Feb. 13, 1746/7 at East Haddam (also recorded at Lebanon), Rev. Joseph Fowler (called Joseph, Jr. in both marriage recordings) m. Sarah Metcalf, dau. of Rev. Joseph Metcalf and Abial Adams, b. Feb. 10, 1720/21 at Falmouth, Mass. She d. June 1, 1779 at East Haddam (g.s.). At the time and consistent with how adult males were then identified in town records, Rev. Fowler was called Joseph Jr. because he was the younger of two similar named men residing at Lebanon, not that his father was named Joseph. To the contrary, Rev. Joseph Fowler was the son of Jonathan "the Giant of America" Fowler, Jr. who since 1726 had been a resident of Coventry, Conn. In 1747 the elder Joseph Fowler at Lebanon was Rev. Fowler's uncle. Dexter used the 1870 Fowler Memoir as a basis for his sketch of Rev. Fowler of Yale College, Class of 1743. Correcting for the erroneous statements in the 1870 Fowler Memoir that Dexter relied on: • Joseph Fowler, the eldest [sic, 3rd] child of Sergeant Jonathan and Hannah (Clark [sic, Smith]) Fowler, and grandson of Jonathan and Elizabeth (Reynolds) Fowler, of Windham [sic, Norwich], Conn., was born at Lebanon [sic, Suffield, now in], Conn., in 1722 [sic, Dec. 5, 1722]. In 1726 his father removed from Lebanon [after having been a resident of Suffield between 1720 and 1724] to Coventry, Conn.; he is traditionally famous for his giant figure and enormous strength. The son m., Feb. 3, 1747, Sarah, dau. of the Rev. Joseph Metcalf (Harv. 1703), of Falmouth, Mass., whose widow had early removed to Lebanon. After this he studied theology, and was licensed to preach by the Hartford South Association, in June, 1749. The next year he was called to settle over the vacant church in Windsor, Conn., but did not accept the call. Early in 1751 he was called to the church in East Haddam, Conn., where he was ordained, May 15, in that year. He d. there, after twenty years of service, June 10, 1771, in his 49th year. His widow d. June 1, 1779, at the age of 61. They had four sons and four daughters, the youngest son a graduate of this College in 1780. Rev. Joseph Fowler and Sarah Metcalf had the following eight children, the eldest b. of record at Lebanon, the rest of record at East Haddam: • i. Joseph Fowler, Jr., b. Dec. 3, 1747 at Lebanon, Conn., d. July 26, 1819 at East Haddam (g.s.); m. Oct. 21, 1771 at East Haddam, Margaret Hall, dau. of Thomas Hall and Margaret Hurlbut, b. June 13, 1746 at East Haddam. She d. in Aug. 1803 at East Haddam (g.s.). Three recorded children. • ii. Elizabeth Fowler, b. Jan. 19, 1750, d. in infancy Feb. 13, 1750. • iii. Elizabeth Fowler, b Oct. 17, 1751, d. in her youth Sept. 19, 1762 (g.s.). • iv. Sarah Fowler, b. Nov. 11, 1753 at East Haddam, d. July 13, 1832 at East Haddam (g.s.); m. Oct. 12, 1780 at East Haddam, Rev. Joseph Vaill, the recently installed pastor of the Hadlyme Cong. Ch., s. of Capt. Joseph Vaill and Jerusha Peck, b. July 14, 1751 at Litchfield, Conn. He d. Nov. 21, 1838 at Killingworth, Conn., but is interred with his wife at the Hadlyme Cong. Ch. Cemetery at East Haddam (g.s.). Six children of the family. • v. Elisha Adams Fowler, b. Sept. 29, 1755, d. Feb. 20, 1840 at Bethel, VT (g.s.); m. Mary Burr, dau. of David Burr and Abigail Silliman, b. Apr. 2, 1755 at Fairfield, Conn. She d. Feb. 6, 1842 at Bethel, VT (g.s.). Nine children of the family. • vi. William Fowler, b. Dec. 27, 1757; d. in infancy July 16, 1759. • vii. Ens. William Fowler, b. Sept. 27, 1761; attended Yale College, Class of 1780, subsequently commissioned an Ensign in the Continental Line during the late stages of the Rev. War; d. unm. in Feb. 1782 of small pox while encamped at "Camp Connecticut" near Peekskill, NY. • viii. Electa Fowler, b. July 7, 1767, d. Sep 5, 1826 at East Haddam (g.s.); m. May 11, 1786 at the Hadlyme Cong. Ch., Dea. Ithamar Harvey, Jr., s. of Capt. Ithamar Harvey and Ann Cone, b. at East Haddam. He d. Mar. 22, 1848 at Cuyahoga County, OH.
