She was also the great granddau. of the immigrants Michael Metalf and Sarah Ellwyn, of Norwich, England and Dedham, Mass. On Oct. 12, 1780 at East Haddam, Conn., Sarah m. Rev. Joseph Vaill, Jr., s. of Capt. Joseph Vaill and Jerusha Peck, b. July 14, 1751 at the Town of Litchfield, Conn. At the time of the marriage, Rev. Vaill was the recently installed pastor of Hadlyme Congregational Church at East Haddam, whereas Sarah's father was pastor of the First Congregational Church of East Haddam, and the marriage undoubtedly took place at Sarah's church. Following Sarah's death, Rev. Joseph Vaill, Jr. retired from the Hadlyme church and moved to the Killingsworth, Conn. home of his son-in-law and dau., David and Amanda (Vaill) Evarts, where he d. Nov. 21, 1838. Sarah Fowler and Rev. Joseph Vaill, Jr. had six known children b. at East Haddam, but only four reached adulthood to marry, and are outlined in their father's memorial. In Rev. Vaill's personal memoir published one year after his death, he had recorded in his personal journal regarding the death of wife Sarah: ...Yesterday morning, I was called to part with the companion of my youth. She expired about six o'clock, after a distressing sickness of more than six weeks. While she had her reason, she appeared to be much composed and resigned to the Divine will. She was scarcely heard to utter a complaint or groan through her long sickness. I hope she was a sincere friend of Christ, and that she has made a happy exchange of worlds. She had been a professor of religion nearly sixty years, and has lived a regular and exemplary life. She has truly been a faithful wife, and a kind and faithful mother to our children. Truly my loss is great. I am left in a lonely condition, but I have abundant cause for thankfulness that God has continued her to me so long. ...This day my beloved companion was committed to the grave. The funeral was appointed at two o'clock, P.M. The Rev. Isaac Parsons preached on the occasion from Psalm cxvi. 15v 'Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.' A large and solemn congregation were present. I must soon follow my departed companion. I hope I have now some comfort in God, and resignation to his holy will.
