Joseph Jeremiah Gough, well known resident of Bristow, will be conducted Friday at 2:00 o'clock in the afternoon at the United Brethren church in Bristow. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Mr. Gough died at his home in Bristow Monday morning as a result of a stroke he suffered more than two years ago and from which he never had fully recovered. He was born on a farm near Clarksville, June 12, 1858, the son of the Rev. and Mrs. William Gough. While still a child, he moved with his parents to a farm five miles northeast of Bristow, and attended the Brushy Mound school in district number six. As a youth he was engaged in several types of work which took him into Minnesota and North Dakota. During his life he plowed more than one hundred acres of brush land. Part of the time he was employed by men who handled stock and later he was a horse and cattle dealer. He married Emma Jane Chapman January 27, 1886, and they lived with his parents for a year until they moved to a prairie farm four and one half miles north-east of Bristow, which he developed and improved and it became the family home for more than fifty years. The Rev. and Mrs. Gough were the parents of seven children, all of whom are living with the exception of the youngest. As a young man he became a member of the Methodist church and more than thirty years ago was issued a local preacher's license by Dr. John C. Magee, a presiding elder of the Methodist church. The Rev., Mr. Gough was supply pastor of the Aredale church for six years. During his pastorate there a new church was built. In the spring of 1939, the Rev. and Mrs. Gough lef the farm and moved to Bristow. Surviving are his wife; two daughters, the Rev. Susanna E. Kernahan of Phoenix, Arizona, and Mrs. Mildred Currell of Pasadena, California; four sons, Dr. Edward T. Gough of Mount Vernon, the Rev. Wilford I. Gough of Fullerton, California, the Rev. Joseph J. Gough of Marsailles, Illinois, and Galal R. Gough of Elsinore, California; a sister Mrs. Elizabeth Corey of Bristow; 27 grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
