Gough died in Excelsior Sanitarium, in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, Tuesday afternoon, January 11, 1916 at 1:35 p.m. There were with him at the time, his devoted wife, his brother, Rev. Joseph Gough and sister, Mrs. B.H. Corey. As he closed his eyes to the things of this world it seemed inexpressibly sad that he should be so far away from home and the other members of his family, he having been so homesick to get back, but the privilege having been impossible, his condition being too critical although much hope had been entertained of his recovery until a sudden change showed the end was near. He was fully conscious until the last and expressed his willingness to go. He had made a brave fight for life. First going to Rochester, where they spent several weeks, but were told nothing could be done. They came back to Bristow for a week and then on to Excelsior Springs, where it became necessary to perform a most serious operation. He had suffered for years with bright's disease and other troubles. The remains were brought to Bristow Wednesday evening and taken to he Corey home until Saturday when the funeral was held from the M.E. church at 1:30 p.m. Rev. Harry Green, pastor of the church, carrying the words of comfort to the sorely bereaved and using the words as found in John 13 - 7. for his text. He also sang with much feeling "He's the one." and a quartette sang old familiar hymns. The church was filled to overflowing. There were beautiful floral offerings. The pall bearers were C.S. Stewart, Chas. DeMoss, W. Hutchinson, A.L. Hardman, Herman Wilder and Frank Fishel of Allison, the latter two having been associated with deceased as township trustees. The interment was in Oak Hill cemetery. Thomas A. Gough was born in Clarksville, Iowa, March 18, 1860 and came with his parents, Rev. and Mrs. Wm. Gough to Bristow and to the farm where he had since lived when 7 years of age. November 17, 1892 he was married to Alma Early at the home of her parents near Bristow. To this union were born 6 children, 3 boys and 3 girls, one son having died in infancy and those living being Mrs. Esther Goodsell, Marion, Everette, Naomi, and Glenn, who with the devoted wife are left to mourn the loss of one of the kindest of husbands and fathers. Shortly after being married he was converted and joined the M.E. church of which he remained a staunch member up until the time of his death, always giving freely toward its support, being one of the trustees and a teacher of the Bible class in Sunday school. He was always ready to help in any good cause for the betterment of this community and he will be missed everywhere. Besides the immediate family he leaves three brothers and two sisters, Will Gough of Clarkfield, Minnesota, George of Clarksville, Rev. Joseph Gough and Mrs. B.H. Corey of this place and Mrs. Jake Kephart of Dumont. The relatives present from out of town to attend the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. James Spain of Parkersburg, Norman Early of Bigelow, Minnesota, Herman of Cambridge, Clifton of Adrian, Minnesota, and T.M. Early of Allison.
