Joseph Vaill and Jerusha Peck, b. of record July 14, 1751 at the Town of Litchfield, Conn. He d. Nov. 21, 1838 at the Town of Killingworth, Conn. at the home of his son-in-law, David Evarts. ...In 1778 Rev. Vaill was a graduate of Dartmouth College at Hanover, NH. He immediately started studying Theology and apprenticed with Rev. Mr. Storrs. In May 1779 he received a license to preach and within three weeks was approached to preach at the Hadlyme Congregational Church at Hadlyme, Conn. He was installed as their pastor Feb. 9, 1780 serving that church for 58 years. ...During various periods Rev. Vaill performed missionary work, spending six weeks in "desolate places" in Vermont. In 1807 he spent 15 weeks in the same endeavor around New York's Black River country. By his 80th birthday in 1831, he felt the infirmities of age and requested replacement by an associate minister. In 1836 Joseph officially retired from the Hadlyme church and moved to Killingworth, Conn. to live with his son-in-law and youngest daughter, David and Amanda (Vaill) Evarts. Two years later Joseph died in his sleep. ...Some of Rev. Vaill's sermons and essays were published in The Connecticut Evangelical Magazine under the nom de plume of Senex and Jethro. The 236-page "Memoir of the Life and Character of the Rev. Joseph Vaill, late Pastor of the Church of Christ in Hadlyme," published in 1839 by Taylor & Dodd of New York City, was edited by Rev. Isaac Parsons of the First Congregational Church at East Haddam, who preached Rev. Vaill's funeral at the Hadlyme church. It must be noted that in New England a Congregational Church was accompanied by an ecclesiastic society, which governed the church and served as a taxing district for support of the church. The Hadlyme church was supported by the Hadlyme Ecclesiastic Society, 2/3rds of its boundary being within the southwest portion of the Town of East Haddam, the balance within the northwest portion of the adjoining Town of Lyme. The church, parsonage and church cemetery were and are still physically located in the Town of East Haddam. Because the family of Rev. Vaill undoubtedly lived at the church parsonage, the birth of his children are recorded in the records of the Town of East Haddam, Conn. On Oct. 12, 1780 at East Haddam, Conn., Rev. Joseph Vaill, Jr. m. Sarah Fowler, dau. of Rev. Joseph Fowler and Sarah Metcalf, b. Nov. 7, 1753 at East Haddam, Conn. At the time, Rev. Vaill's soon to be father-in-law was pastor of the First Congregational Church of East Haddam, and the marriage undoubtedly took place at Sarah's church. Sarah d. July 13, 1832 at East Haddam, Conn. They had six known children b. at East Haddam, but only four reached adulthood to marry: • i. Joseph Vaill, b. Aug. 29, 1781, d. Nov. 1, 1785. • ii. Rev. William Fowler Vaill, b. June 7, 1783, d. Feb. 24, 1865 at Henry County, IL; m. 1) Dec. 28, 1808 at New Haven, Conn., Asenath Selden, dau. of Col. Richard Ely Selden and Desire Colt, b. Dec. 28, 1785 at Lyme, Conn. She d. Nov. 24, 1834. He m. 2) June 10, 1840 at Peoria, IL, Lucretia Loomis, dau. of Eleazer Loomis and Lucretia Porter, b. Feb. 10, 1806 at Coventry, Conn. She d. Mar. 25, 1867 at Henry County, IL. Ten children of the family. • iii. Timothy Vaill, b. June 29, 1785, d. in adolescence Aug. 13, 1794. • iv. Sarah Vaill, b. Mar. 29, 1788, d. Apr. 25, 1854 at Monson, Mass.; m. Jan. 6, 1831 at Brimfield, Mass. (by her brother Rev. Joseph Vaill, 3rd) as his 2nd wife, Joel Norcross, Esq., s. of William Norcross, b. Aug. 6, 1776 at Sturbridge, Mass. He d. May 5, 1846 at Monson, Mass. There were no children of the marriage. Joel Norcross had by his 1st wife dau. Emily (Norcross) Dickinson, mother of the reknowned New England poetess Emily Dickinson. • v. Rev. Joseph Vaill, 3rd, b. July 28, 1790, d. Feb. 22, 1869 at Palmer, Mass. as the longtime pastor of the Brimfield, Mass. Cong. Chh.; m. 1) Dec. 7, 1813, Ann Kirtland, who d. Feb. 6, 1829 at Brimfield, m. 2) Jan. 7, 1830 at Ware, Mass., Nancy Pope, widow of Amos Howe. Eight known children of the family, all by 1st wife Ann Kirtland. • vi. Amanda Vaill, b. Nov. 5, 1797, d. Feb. 16, 1883 at Killingworth, Conn.; m. Mar. 2, 1836 at East Haddam (by her father) as his 2nd wife, David Evarts, s. of Nathan Evarts and Tamar Kelsey, b. Feb. 26, 1796 at Killingworth, Conn. He d. Apr. 22, 1860 at Killingworth. One child of the marriage. David had six children by his 1st wife, Dencey Redfield, latter the paternal descendant of John Alden of the Mayflower.
