Joshua Peter Bodfish was a theologian. He was was brought up in the Orthodox church, but studied and took orders in the Episcopal church. Joshua Peter Bodfish was a theologian. He was was brought up in the Orthodox church, but studied and took orders in the Episcopal church. He officiated as assistant rector at All Saints Church in Philadelphia. He was baptized into the Roman Catholic church by Bishop Domenic of Pittsburgh, Pa., in 1863, and pursued his theological course at the seminary of our Lady of the Angels, Niagara, and at Seton Hall, N.J. He joined Father Hecker's Paulist community in New York, and was ordained priest Nov. 30, 1866. For many years he did mission work with the Paulists, and organized and built up the Young men's Catholic institute in New York. In 1876 he went to the cathedral in Boston, first as chancellor of the diocese and secretary to Archbishop Williams and later as rector of the cathedral. In 1888 he was appointed rector of St. John's church, Canton, Mass. He was one of the founders of the Bostonian society, a director of the Bunker Hill monument association and a member of the New England Historical genealogical society. He died one month short of his ninety-first birthday, February 25, 1930.
