His mother died during his infancy. He attended the public and private schools of Falmouth, removing to Providence to begin his apprenticeship to learn the trade of a tailor when he was 16 years old. Parents: William Bodfish & Deborah T. -------------------------------------- The following information was kindly supplied by Jan Harley (#47468145) Falmouth Enterprise, Saturday, May 19, 1900; Page: 8 Obituary Colonel William Bodfish who died at East Greenwich Sunday morning, was 85 years old on the 22d of February and was born in Falmouth. His mother died during his infancy. He attended the public and private schools of Falmouth, removing to Providence to begin his apprenticeship to learn the trade of a tailor when he was 16 years old. After four years he returned to Falmouth, worked several years at his trade and then went again to Providence. At the age of 28 the young man went to East Greenwich. In 1855 he became cashier of the Rhode Island Central bank which position he filled until the financial crisis of 1857 caused the bank to suspend. He then opened a tailoring business in Providence which he carried on till 1861, meanwhile retaining his home in East Greenwich. Here he remained as one of the leading business men of the: town until 1866 when Taunton afforded an opening for a dry goods and millinery store, which was in 1870 removed to East Greenwich. For 10 years, he successfully managed this business until in 1880 he retired from active pursuits. Colonel Bodfish was married in 1835 to Elizabeth S. Synya of Providence, who died in April, 1863. To them were born eight children, one of whom is Rev. J.P. Bodfish of Canton, Mass. Robinson C. Bodfish of this town is the only surviving brother of the deceased. The funeral was held from the Baptist church in East Greenwich on Wednesday afternoon. -----------------------------
