Description	:	Martin Luther Banks, Jr. was born in Bennettsville, South Carolina on December 3d, 1869, the son of Reverend Martin Luther Banks, Sr. and his wife, Ann Amelia Skinner Banks. After attending various common and preparatory schools, he entered the Wofford College Fitting School in February 1889. The next year was spent under Prof. H. G. Sheridan, completing his secondary education at the Sheridan Classical School in Orangeburg, South Carolina. Read More	Martin Luther Banks, Jr. was born in Bennettsville, South Carolina on December 3d, 1869, the son of Reverend Martin Luther Banks, Sr. and his wife, Ann Amelia Skinner Banks. After attending various common and preparatory schools, he entered the Wofford College Fitting School in February 1889. The next year was spent under Prof. H. G. Sheridan, completing his secondary education at the Sheridan Classical School in Orangeburg, South Carolina. He then attended Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, graduating in 1894 with an A.B. degree. He married Maud Dickson on March 24th, 1898 in Columbia, South Carolina in a ceremony performed by the father of the bride. Both were the children of Methodist ministers. Their union produced eight children, three sons and five daughters. He was called to preach from his earliest recollections and embarked on his ministry in April 1894 when he was licensed to preach at the Bethel Church in Spartanburg, South Carolina and was admitted on trial to the South Carolina Methodist Conference. He became a deacon in 1896 and an elder in 1898. He preached at over twenty churches during his career, moving frequently as was the custom of the Methodist Conference at the time. He also served as the presiding elder of the Orangeburg District of the South Carolina Methodist Conference. His appointments included Cedar Creek circuit 1895-96, Langley circuit 1897, Lexington Fork circuit 1898, Fairfield circuit 1899, Belmont circuit 1900-01, Duncan & Saxon 1902-03, Langley circuit 1904, Chester Station 1905-07, Darlington 1908-09, Newberry 1909-11, Orangeburg District 1912-15, Dillon 1916-17, Trinity in Charleston 1918, Hartsville 1919-22, Bishopville 1923-26, Lake City 1927, Barnwell 1928-29, Kingstree 1930, College Place in Columbia 1931-34, Summerton 1935-38 and St. Matthews 1939-42. Also, he was Chairman, Board of Temperance and Social Service; Board of Education, secretary four years, chairman four years; Board of Christian Education; General Conference 1926. He retired in 1942 after serving as pastor of Saint Paul’s Methodist Church in Saint Matthews, South Carolina, but was soon recalled to preach at four country churches, two each Sunday. He eventually retired for good in 1953. He and his wife spent their retirement years in Saint Matthews, South Carolina until she passed away in 1959. He then moved to the Forest Hills Retirement Home in Columbia, South Carolina to live until he passed away.
