Whether Isham Hall was a brother, nephew or other relative of Rev. Nathaniel Hall is unknown. The Colonial Clergy of Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina by Frederick Lewis Weis, p.23: "Nathaniel Hall, sett. Upper Banister (Pittsylvania) Va., 1774-1774; Bapt." Before moving to South Carolina, Records of the Roanoke Association, indicate that elder Nathaniel Hall became pastor of the Catawba Baptist Church in 1777, and continued "faithfully to discharge the duties of his office until 1785". Nathaniel Hall also provided ministerial services for Buffaloe Church along with Obadiah Echols. This church was located near Pannell's Bridge, near the line between Halifax and Pittsylvania Counties. Catawba Church was located in the northern part of Halifax County, near the line of the Lynchburg and Durham railroad" (Historical Sketches of the Churches in Roanoke Association, pp. 320-21). "1785 Halifax County, Virginia Heads of Families" shows William Hall Jr., Nathaniel Hall (10 in 2 households on his property) and Sarah Dejarnett lived in the same district. Rev. Nathaniel Hall moved about 1785 from Halifax County, Virginia to South Carolina with his two brothers, John and Fenton, and sister Elizabeth DeJarnette (later Mrs. Israel Pickens). (Re, Historical Southern Families, Volume V, John Bennett Boddie [1967]). The sale of land from William Hall of Halifax County, Va. to Fenton Hall in 1771 indicates Fenton was of legal age by 1771, and most researchers place the date of his birth c1746. The families of the three brothers and their sister settled at Lee Shoals Area of Rocky River which was then a part of the Pendleton District of South Carolina (The Bannister, Kay, DeJarnette, Latimer, Mitchell, Pearman, Pruitt, Tucker Families of Virginia and S.C. by Mitchell, p. 7) Rev. Nathaniel Hall moved from Virginia and settled near Storeville, Pendleton District, South Carolina. Nathaniel Hall is known to have founded a Church c1785 in the Laurens District of S.C. before moving to the Pendleton District c1787. The 1790 census Ninety-Six Dist., Pendleton Co., S.C. shows his household consisted of 4 males under 16, 2 over 16; 2 females, and one slave. The 1790 Census shows that the three brothers and their sister who married Israel Pickens after the death of her husband Elias DeJarnette, Jr. were living very close together. "Rocky River Baptist Church is located in Abbeville County some twelve miles south from Anderson. It was originally known as Wilson Creek, and was an outgrowth of the Little River Baptist Church. The first account of Baptist preaching in the area was about 1790, when Nathan Hall began preaching. He was followed by George Tilman and James Crowther. In 1794 they were constituted a branch of Little River Church with Elder Nathan Hall becoming their pastor or supply. This group labored for ten years, under the leadership of Hall, Tillman and Phagans. In the Spring of 1803 they were constitued an independent church with about twenty members. Elder James Crowther was elected pastor." (History of Rocky River Baptist Church Brochure). In 1803, Rocky River became a member of the Saluda Baptist Association. Nathaniel Hall left a will dated 19 Oct 1793 at Anderson County, South Carolina, which was proven on 24 Jan 1797. He named as executors his "brothers Fenton Hall and John Hall." He named his wife Elizabeth (possibly Falconer) and one son, Nathaniel, but mentioned his "other boys" under age 21. Will Book C, pp. 104-105: Will of Nathaniel Hall. All estate deeded me by John Falkner as may be seen in records of Laurence County if ever it is obtained equally divided among all my children. Negro woman Ufley (?) and her daughter Jinny. Wife, Elizabeth. Son, Nathaniel. If other boys stay with their Mother until they reach 21 she shall furnish them horse, saddle and bridle. Property not to be sold out of family. Dated 19 Oct. 1793. Executors: Brothers Fenton and John Hall. Att.: Robt. Noris (signed) Nathaniel Hall Jos. Ervin Benj. Hall Proven 24 Jan. 1797. Robert A. Hall says: "Lists of his children vary, but most include the following names: Nathaniel Hall, Jr., Lent Hall (father of Fenton), Joseph Sanford Hall, John "Stone Fence" Hall, Caleb Hall, Martin Hall, Anthony Hall, and a daughter (possibly Elizabeth). William Bulger Hall is also cited by some researchers as a son. Census information supports claim that maximum size of family was probably seven sons and one daughter. Records of ASJ Hall indicate that Martin Hall was probably a son of Fenton rather than Nathaniel. The relationship of Benjamin Hall who was present when Nathaniel Hall's 1793 will was recorded as well as his proving his Will in Open Court 24 Jan. 1797 is unknown. His Will is on file at the Anderson County Public Library, Anderson, SC, and also at the South Carolina Department of Archives and History, Columbia, SC." Anthony Hall married Jane Boyd and moved from Pendleton District, S.C., to Pulaski County, Kentucky, with some of the Boyds shortly before 1800. He bought land there March 12, 1811 from his father-in-law John Boyd Jr. on Puncheon Creek, a branch of Fishing Creek. One researcher says he also bought land from one William Hall. Anthony Hall is shown on the 1810 Pulaski County census. A recent researcher believes this Anthony Hall was born 1737 in ASKHAM WESTMORELAND ENGLAND, and sailed to Charleston, S.C., "about 1782" with a son William Hadder Hall (b.1765) and was unrelated to the other Halls of Newberry, S.C., with whom they interacted. Other descendants have long held that William Hadder Hall (1775- 1847) was born in Bedford County, Virginia, a son of Hezekiah Hall who gave him a gift of 225 acres of land in 1802. The Hall DNA Project results indicate that Nathaniel Hall and Fenton Hall of Halifax Co., VA. and Pendleton Dist., S.C., were related. Descendants have long said that Rev. Nathaniel Hall and family were buried at Rocky River Cemetery but no readable markers are found today. They would be among the first graves in the cemetery.
