Read More	Daily Press (Newport News, VA) - March 17, 2011 Nelson David Burkholder, 94, a longtime resident of the Denbigh community of Newport News, Va., went to his Heavenly home on Friday, March 11. Burkholder was born March 24, 1916, near Edom in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, the second of five children of the late Lewis A. and Laura Wenger Burkholder. At age three, the family moved to Newport News, where he has resided since. On Jan. 8, 1939, he married Dorothy Holloway, the love of his life, with whom he recently celebrated 72 years of marriage. Burkholder was a man who loved his 'Queen,' and they set a wonderful example of Christian marriage for others. For many years, he operated Burkholder Dairy with his father, producing and bottling dairy products for the Peninsula. Later he established Burkholder Land Company, developing land and building homes, where he lived up to his motto, 'Better Built By Burkholder.' Burkholder was the founding pastor of Calvary Mennonite Church, where he served for 22 years; and later was pastor of Warwick River Mennonite Church, both in Newport News. He will long be remembered for his keen insights into Scripture and his ability to teach others, as well as his unselfish and sacrificial giving of his time. From childhood, he memorized large portions of Scripture, and continued to quote them up to his final days. Nelson Burkholder Sr. is survived by his wife, Dorothy; a son, Nelson Jr. and his wife, Kay Crenshaw Burkholder, and their daughter, Kristen, all of Newport News; and a brother, Lewis A. Burkholder and wife, Helen of Powhatan. Burkholder was preceded in death by a son, Sanford; his parents, Lewis A. and Laura Burkholder; a brother, James; two sisters, June Weber and Frances Holeik. A memorial service to celebrate Nelson Burkholder's life will be held in the main sanctuary of the Warwick River Mennonite Church, at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 19, with Pastor John Dey and Elder Kathryn Baer presiding. Viewing and visitation are from 2 to 3 p.m. in the fellowship room at the church, and interment in the Warwick River Church Cemetery will follow the service.
