Norman McCallum, 93, Jan. 18, 1912 - Feb. 14, 2005. HARLAN - Rev. Norman Alfred McCallum, son of Alfred and Iva (Melrose) McCallum, was born Jan. 18, 1912, in Bristol, England. He came to the United States in 1912, on the Lusitania, and lived in the Chicago suburbs of Evanston and Oak Park. Sept. 18, 1924, Norman went back to England with his parents and two brothers. He attended Hove College, a finishing school for boys, and worked with several law firms. He began training for the ministry in 1934 and graduated in June. of 1939 from New College London University in England with a diploma in Theology. Norman was ordained July 11, 1939, at -Bookham Congregational Church. In 1939, Norman married Marjorie Hudspith. In 1946, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts. In 1951, he served the Dover Congregational Church in Cleveland, OH, for nine Sundays and decided that he wanted to return to the United States. In December of 1952, Norman, Marjorie and their five-year-old daughter, Brenda, came to the United States on the Mauretania, where he began his first American ministry job in Tabor. In 1955-1957, he took postgraduate studies at H.T.H. Seminary. In 1956, their daughter, Rosiland, was born. In the summer of 1958, Norman took a preaching job for three months in London, England. While there he had the privilege of visiting several European countries including France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. In 1954-1959, Norman obtained a Bachelor of Divinity and a Masters in Theology. Their son, Peter, was born in 1960. That same year, Norman took postgraduate studies at Burton College and Seminary and obtained a Doctor of Theology. He served churches in Wyoming, Illinois, Kansas, lowa and South Dakota. In 1960, he became a United States citizen. He continued his studies and achieved a Doctor of Divinity and Philosophy. Jan. 20, 1973, Norman married Mabel Thompson of Soldier. In 1978, Norman began preaching at Gregory, SD where he became pastor at the United Church of Christ for almost five years. June 3, 1995, Norman married Thelma Blaine in Harlan. He died Feb. 14, 2005, at Myrtue Memorial Hospital at age 93 years and 27 days. Norman is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mabel; two brothers, Douglas and Gordon; and one step great-granddaughter, Jamé Sweatman. Survivors include his wife, Thelma of Harlan; his children, Brenda (Tom) Kelly of Grand Junction, CO; Rosalind (Dennis) Neeland of Great Bend, KS; Peter McCallum of Wichita, KS; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his stepchildren, Linda (David) Frain of Omaha, NE; Violet (Allan) Weiss of Cross, SC; Connie Henkelman of Harlan; Jim Blaine (Marsha) of Cross, SC Betty Briggs, Larry Blaine (Bonnie), all of Harlan; 20 step grandchildren; 27 step greatgrandchildren; nieces, nephews and other relatives. Funeral services were held Feb. 18, 2005, at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Harlan, with Rev. Donna Ewert officiating. Burial was in the Harlan Cemetery with Jeremy Briggs, Wesley Frain, Bob Summerfield, Larry Blaine, Michael Hancock and Edward Blaine casket bearers.
