McBride Retired After Pastorate at Victor VICTOR - Four Methodist Episcopal ministers joined in conducting funeral services for a departed brother, the Rev. O. E. McBride, 78, at Victor Monday. They were the Rev. Walter Smith of West Liberty, the Rev. Thos. Osborn of Wellman, the Rev. O. J. Fix of Victor and the Rev. R. G. Nye of Colfax. Music at the services was provided by the church choir that sang when the Rev. Mr. McBride was pastor of the Victor church. Burial followed at the I.O.O.F. cemetery. From the time of his conversion in February, 1883, until his death the Rev. Mr. McBride's life was filled to the brim with rich and successful religious experiences and service. He was baptized and accepted into full membership at Tool's Chapel six months after his conversion. A month later he was elected Sunday school superintendent and afterwards filled nearly every office in his home church. First Sermon in 1891 On Aug. 5, 1981, he was elected an exhorter by the class at Reasonor near which place he was then living. On the following Sunday night he preached his first sermon in the church where he was converted. He continued to preach there every Sunday night for more than a year. Four year's later Mr. McBride was voted a local preacher's licence at Thornburg, a relationship which continued until he was admitted into the conference in 1906. During this time he did considerable evangelistic work. For two years the Rev. Mr. McBride supplied the Taintor charge and the Rose Hill charge three years. Then followed four years at Cedar, five years at Sonora and Sheridan, five years at Kalona, five years at Wapello and five years at Victor where he retired in 1932 after 31 years of active ministry. Since that time the Rev. Mr. and Mrs. McBride have continued to reside at Victor. Oscar Elwood McBride was born near Monroe, Jasper County, Aug. 11, 1857. He died at Victor on June 11. He spent the first 25 years of his life in the community of his birth. On Oct. 23, 1879, he was united in marriage to Miss Sarah J. Lust, a schoolmate and neighbor. Four Children Survive Four children born to this union remain to sorrow at the departure of a sympathetic and loving father. They are W. L. of Reasnor; O. E. Jr. of Aliba; Mrs. C. W. Garrett of Ferguson and Mrs. Harry Muller of Victor. Also surviving are his wife, 16 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and one sister, Nettie Scarbrough of Comas, Wash. During his pastorate at Victor the Rev. Mr. McBride had won the devotion of the young and old of the church alike. His sermons were full of the love of the Master, love for His people and for all mankind and he entered into the activities of the young people of the church with a sympathetic and helpful spirit.
