Description	:	Paul Carl Matthias was born December 12, 1910, the first son of Rev. August and Ottilie Fikenscher Matthias, in Malcom, Iowa, in the parsonage of Trinity Lutheran Church, located on Highway 63. There were ten children born to this family. Paul attended various elementary and parochial schools and graduated from Anamosa High School in 1928. August and Ottilie Fikenscher Matthias, in Malcom, Iowa, in the parsonage of Trinity Lutheran Church, located on Highway 63. There were ten children born to this family. Paul attended various elementary and parochial schools and graduated from Anamosa High School in 1928. He attended Wartburg College and Wartburg Theological Seminary, graduating with the class of 1934. On June 3, 1934, he was installed as pastor of St. John Lutheran Church in Dundee, Iowa. Paul and Ruth (Gross) Matthias were married on September 20, 1935, beginning a relationship of love and devotion which endured for 68 years. Paul was called to St. John Lutheran Church, Clarksville, and was installed on December 8, 1940, where he served until his retirement in February, 1976. He was visitation pastor at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Waverly from 1975 to 1986. Pastor Matthias was always active in local organizations, serving as member of the Clarksville School Board from 1948 to 1964, four years of which he was president. He joined the Clarksville Lions Club in 1940 and served in various offices throughout the years. He was part of the Clarksville Improvement Corporation since 1956. In the larger church he served as member of the board of the Lutheran Children's Home (Bremwood), the Board of Home Missions of the Iowa District of the ALC, secretary of the Iowa District and member of the Executive Board (1956-60). Paul also served as secretary of the merger committee for three years culminating in the 1960 merger of three Lutheran church bodies. On the local level, Paul was instrumental in organizing the Community Nursing Home of Clarksville, and later the Community Retirement Village. He served on the Board of Directors of these corporations since their inceptions. He assisted in the construction of the present St. John Lutheran Church building in Clarksville. Other service included the Butler County Zoning Board and the committee for planning, programming and construction of the new library. Paul was a fine craftsman who enjoyed woodworking, making furniture and toys for the family. In his spare time, he enjoyed crossword puzzles and especially loved the fishing vacations in Minnesota. All of these achievements pale in comparison to his role as husband and father, an inspiration which led all the children into lives of service and ministry. Paul died Friday, September 5, 2003, at the Waverly Municipal Hospital of natural causes. Paul was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, four sisters and one son, James David, who died in 1970. Paul is survived by his wife, Ruth; their four children; Paul Frederick, born July 24, 1936; Robert William, born July 27, 1937; James David, born January 5, 1942; and Ruth Ellen, born April 26, 1946; daughters-in-law Dixie (Likkel) Matthias and Laura (Werner) Matthias. six grandchildren: Philip, Mark, Todd, James, Benjamin and Rachel; three great-grandchildren, Lori, Kathleen and Bryan; one brother, Arthur (Betty) Matthias of Bellevue, Washington; and two sisters, Ruth (Joe) Trautman and Helene Casten, both of Chicago, Illinois. Funeral Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, September 10, 2003, Redeemer Lutheran Church, Waverly, Iowa with Pastor Jim Carpenter and Pastor Marcia Kifer officiating. Organist was Diane Beane. Special Music was by Rachel Freed, James Matthias and Todd Matthias. Hymns were "I Know That My Redeemer Lives," "In Heaven Above," "Oh Take My Hand, Dear Father" and "Children of the Heavenly Father." Honorary Casketbearers were Wayne Rohlwing, Chris Hoodjer, Vern Poppen, Karl Moe, Mike Aubrey and Galen Eiben. Casketbearers were Frank Reints, Scott Arenholz, Elso Reints, Steve Arenholz, Sike Reints and G.G. Roose. Flower Person was Jim Groen. Memorials: Cedar Valley Hospice, St. John Lutheran Church, Clarksville, Redeemer Lutheran Church, Waverly. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Clarksville, was in charge of arrangements.
