Description	:	Although his gravestone gives his birth year birth as 1839, records from St. Michael's Lutheran Church, Strasburg, Pa., give the year as 1840. He was the son of Philip Heinrich and Margareta (Hess) Doerr. Louisa Doerr Leeking was a sister. Philip Doerr enrolled at Pennsylvania (now Gettysburg) College in either 1860 0r 1861. He was the son of Philip Heinrich and Margareta (Hess) Doerr. Louisa Doerr Leeking was a sister. Philip Doerr enrolled at Pennsylvania (now Gettysburg) College in either 1860 0r 1861. He is listed as a sophomore in the catalogue of 1861-1862. From June 16 to July 30, 1863 (during the Confederate incursion into Pennsylvania), he served as a private in Co. A of the 26th Regiment of Pa. militia under Capt. Klinefelter. After graduation in June or July of 1864, Thaddeus Stevens secured him a position in the Arsenal Department in Washington, D.C., but he left in February of 1865 to join the 192nd NY Inf. Before his reenlistment, he returned to Lancaster and was married to Wilhemina Bream by Walter Powell, Presbyterian Minister, on February 14, 1865 . According to his Civil War Pension file, Doerr was enrolled at Tarrytown, New York, on Feb. 24, 1865, as a corporal in Co. K of the 192nd New York Volunteer Regiment. He was honorably discharged at Cumberland, Maryland, on August 28, 1865. At some point he also served as a delegate of the U.S. Christian Commission at Nashville, Lookout Mountain, and Chattanooga, Tennessee. After the war, he taught school in Kingswood, W. Va. and Cumberland, Md. In the later site he studied theology with Rev. A. J. Weddell and Bishop C. F. Hyer. He was licensed in 1868 and began serving Lutheran congregations throughout western Pennsylvania: Bloody Run, McConnellsburg, Venango (Crawford County),St. Michael's (Armstrong County), Connellsville, Warren, Salt Lake City (Utah), Sarversville, Delmont, Darlington, Brush Creek, and Adamsburg. He frequently dealt with the conflict in the church between the use of English or German for services. Greensburg Daily ( Greensburg, Pa.) Friday, Janusary 1, 1909, p. 1 “Death Calls Rev. P. Doerr Rev. Philip Doerr, pastor of Brush Creek and Penn charges, died at 7:15 Thursday, December 31, aged 68 years, 11 months and 8 days. Stricken with paralysis on September 29, he was on a fair road to recovery until Thursday, December 24, when he suffered a collapse of the entire system and continued to sink until he died. He had resigned from his Brush Creek charge but a few days ago. [Continued on page 4] Rev. Philip Doerr was born in the city of Lancaster, Pa., January 23, 1840. In this city he received his early education in the public schools and in the high school. He was confirmed by the Rev. Wm. Bentes, pastor of Zion’s German Lutheran Church. He is a graduate of Pennsylvania College, Gettysburg, Pa., where he studied five years. During the invasion of Pennsylvania by General Lee in 1864, and the battle of Gettysburg, he, in connection with about 60 students, was sworn into the United States service and served as a soldier during that memorable period in Co. A. 26th Regt. P. V. M. He graduated in the class of 1864, having been honored with the German oration. After his graduation he received an appointment as clerk through Hon. Thaddeus Stephens, in the U.S. Arsenal at Washington, D.C. On February 24th, 1865, he again enlisted in the 192nd New York Volunteers, Co. K. in which he was Corporal, but serving most of the time as Clerk at Regiment headquarters. After his discharge from the U. S. service he accepted the principalship of the Academy and Normal School at Kingswood, Preston County, W. Va. From 1866-68 he was principal of the public schools of Cumberland, Md. During this time he pursued a private theological course under the direction of Rev. A. J. Weddell and Bishop and Dr. Hyer, who for a time was pastor of the German Lutheran church at Cumberland, Md. He was licensed in 1868 by Dr. Hyer who was acting president of the Minnesota Synod, and after having served as a supply in the First English Lutheran Church, Cumberland Md., during its vacancy occasioned by the resignation of Dr. A. Weddell in connection with his duties as principal of the public schools. He received a call the spring of 1869, a unanimous call to the Everett City parish in Bedford county, Pa. He has been in the active ministry for years and connected with the Pittsburg Synod since 1871. He occupied a number of important pulpits in Western Pennsylvania and also Southern Pennsylvania. He was married February 14, 1865, to Wilhelmina Bream. This union was blessed with eight children, three of whom have preceded their father to eternity. The children living are, Luther Doerr of Buffalo, N. Y.. Mrs. Mary Curtis of Pasco., Wash., Philip Doerr, Irwin; A, M. Doerr, Jeanette; and Mrs. O. F. Myers, Adamsburg. He has been pastor of the Brush Creek-Penn charge for over eleven years, During his long and successful ministry, he has served the following congregations: Everett City, Bedford county, Pa.; McConnellsburg, Fulton County, Pa.; Venango, Crawford County, Pa.; Cochrans’ Mills, Armstrong County, Pa.; West Newton, Westmoreland County; Warren, Warren County; Salt Lake City, Utah; Saxonburg and Sarversville, Pa.; Delmont, Pa; Ligonier, Brush Creek and Penn."
