Life and Work of Rev. McCready. Rev. Robert J. McCready, D. D. was born near New Galilee, Beaver County, Pa., February 14, 1840. His father was Hugh McCready and his mother Agnes Sharp, whose father was one of the pioneers of western Pennsylvania. He received his education at a country school and a private academy, finishing his college course at Franklin college, New Athens, Ohio, after his return from the war. He took the three-year course and a year of post graduate work at Xenia, Ohio. He was licensed on June 17, 1868, by Wheeling Presbytery, and signified his willingness to serve whatever field, foreign or home, to which the church might send him. In 1861 he entered the union army at Lincoln's first call for volunteers as a musician in Co. K, Regiment 10, army of the Potomac. He also assisted in the ambulance corps and served for over two years, when, on account of the fever, he was sent to the hospital at Washington, D. C., where he was confined for several months. He was in the second battle of Bull Run, Seven Days' battle, Battle of the Wilderness, and numerous other important engagements. He was sent as a missionary to Nebraska, arriving in Pawnee City via, Brownville Saturday afternoon, April 28, 1869, and "on the same afternoon rode twenty-six miles on horse back in order to preach on the next day and organize a Sabbath school in the Stewart settlement. " Thus his active life began in Nebraska. He preached in numerous homes and school houses in Pawnee county, and also preached in the United Presbyterian mission church in Nebraska City for three months. On April 28, 1871, he was ordained pastor of the United Presbyterian church of Pawnee City, which congregation had been previously organized, and at this time had a membership of seven, all of whom have passed away. He was instrumental in organizing most of the United Presbyterian congregations in Pawnee presbytery. On March 26, 1905, he resigned the pastorate of the congregation to which he had ministered for thirty-six years and which was his only charge. In 1884 he, with the assistance of others, organized the Pawnee City academy, and he continued as president of the board of directors until its discontinuance in 1908. He was united in marriage Dec. 29, 1870, to Margaret Edna Yost of Harrisville, Ohio, who died April 2, 1910. To this union were born six daughters, Mrs. Margaret Elaine Brown, of Ravenna, Neb.; Mrs. Mary Agnes Wallace, of Kansas City, Mo.; Caroline Isidore who lived with her father; Mrs. Eva Gertrude Dillon, of Paxton, Neb.; Mrs. Elizabeth Mabel Dort, of Kansas City, Mo.; and Lucy Vera, who died February 3, 1913. His parents, brother, Rev. Jonathan McCready, and three sisters have preceded him to his heavenly home. He passed away at eleven a.m. July 23, 1915, at Omaha, Neb., after having undergone an operation for appendicitis, at the age of seventy-five years, five months and nine days. The funeral services were held at the family residence in Pawnee City at 3:30 Sabbath afternoon, July 25, conducted by Rev. J. A. Thompson, D. D., president of Tarkio college, Tarkio, Mo., assisted by Rev. J. H. Montgomery. The G. A. R. officiated at the grave. G. A. R. Memoriam--Dr. Robert J. McCready. No verbal eulogy of ours can add to the glories of a noble, patriotic life well spent; but we feel constrained on behalf of posterity to present a feeble tribute to manly worth devoted to highest ideals of christian patriotism. In 1861, upon President Lincoln's first call for volunteers, our beloved comrade sprang to the colors in defense of his country, enlisting in company K, 10th U. S. Vol. He served with distinction in various capacities, principally connected with the ambulance corps, participating in many engagements of the Army of the Potomac. We have no record of the date of his discharge, but it was no doubt with high honor. Of his religious and civic life in this community it is unnecessary to speak. Joined to a loving, noble and sympathetic companion, they devoted themselves to all the best things in a wide circle of influence. They reared a devoted family of six daughters, five of whom survive to mourn the irreparable loss of parental love and care. The mortal remains were laid to rest beside those of his departed wife and daughter, beneath the fold of the flag he loved, there to await the resurrection of the just. Resolved. That we extend our sincere condolence to the surviving daughters, relatives, friends and all who suffer a sense of personal bereavement, and that a copy of this memoir be spread upon the records of this post.
