Stuart S. Ryder died of pneumonia, at his home near Mt. Grove in Bath county on last Saturday, aged 79 years and 7 months. On Monday the remains were brought to Green Hill church by undertaker H.F. Slaven,of Monterey. Where a service was held, that was attended by five hundred people, conducted by the pastor of the deceased, Rev. Richardson, Rev. K.L Eutsler and Rev. H.T. Heyronimous. After the service interment was made near the grave of a sister of Mr. Ryder, Mrs. George Bird. Mr. Ryder leaves no children, but a wife, one brother Aaron Ryder of Frost, W.Va., and two or three brothers in the West. For forty years, perhaps, Mr. Ryder had been a minister of the gospel. Part of that time having been spent in the regular service of he Baltimore conference of the M. E. Church, South. Our older readers will remember the time when he was engaged in the active ministry in this county. In this relation & as local minister, he has no doubt been the means of accomplishing much good. Mr. Ryder's first wife was a daughter of Andrew Lockridge, late of Jacksons river and the one who survives him was Miss Lizzie Hickman. He was born at the old Lightner homestead near Valley Center, now owned by Mr. Anthony Lighter. Richmond Times Dispatch January 1903 WARM SPRINGS. VA.. January 31, Rev. Stuart B. Ryder, an able and highly esteemed Methodist minister, died at his home at Sunrise, Bath county, last Saturday. Mr. Ryder was about eighty years old and had preached with great success in this county, Highland and Alleghany counties, and Pocahontas county, W. Va. His remains were buried at "Green Hill", Highland county. Weekly Register February 26, 1874 A Rev. Nimrod - The Rockingham Register states on the authority of "an old hunter of the mountains," that Rev. S. S. Ryder, of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, now in charge of Highland circuit, during the last season, killed seven fine deer and one bear, the bear being the largest that has been killed for years in the mountains, the hide of which was seven feet in length after being dressed. Lockridge were married, 20 August 1850, at Bath Co., Virginia. Surety was A. Lockridge. Stewart Ryder was a minister of the Gospel in Highland County, Virginia.
