N. Graves dies at 97; was retired Logan minister. The Rev. Willis N. Graves of Logan, a retired Methodist minister died about 5 a.m., Friday at St. Cloud, Fla., where he was spending the winter. He was 97 years of age. The Rev. Mr. Graves had spent the winters in Florida for the past 17 years. The Rev. Mr. Graves had suffered a stroke earlier in the week. Services, directed by Bolton-Schumacher funeral home, were held at 2 p.m., Monday in the Logan Methodist church. The services were in charge of Dr. Ralph Johns, president of Simpson college, Indianola, and Rev. Joseph Mason of Logan. Vocal music was by Mrs. W. R. Burns, Mrs. Evelyn McKay was pianist. Interment was in Logan cemetery. Casket bearers: Paul Watts, Donald Dickinson, Floyd Fifield, Ed Chappell, Robert Harvey and Chris Peterson. Mr. Graves was born in Lucas county, Iowa and was reared on a farm there. In January, 1893 he was married to Cordie McCorkle. In answering a call to the ministry, he enrolled in Simpson college. He completed his studies there in 1898. Mr. Graves was then assigned to a Harrison county charge at Magnolia. He later served pastorates at Riverton, Randolph, Fourth Avenue Church (it was actually called “Fifth Avenue”) in Council Bluffs, Logan, Glenwood and Woodbine, Ia., and Vermillion, S. D. These often included two or more churches. Despite his advanced age, he remained active and was called upon occasionally to officiate at funerals. He drove an automobile until a few years ago. After the death of his wife, Cordie, he married Florence May Kennedy on June 30, 1909. He retired from the ministry and returned to Logan where he entered private business. Mr. Graves was long engaged in the insurance business and had been president of several banks in Logan and Perry. As late as 1961 he was head of an insurance firm in Logan. He was an owner of farm land in Harrison county. He was a resident of Harrison county for 67 years. Survivors: Sons, Edwin of Syracuse, N. Y., and Harold of Poppino Beach, Fla.; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.” Contributor: Candace Mailand (49741566)
