Owens Shaner on May 1, 1918, on a farmstead near Geneva and passed away on January 12, 1989, at the St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln at the age of 70 years, 8 months and 12 days. He was the older of two sons. Rex attended Geneva Public Schools and graduated with the Class of 1936. His life work began after graduation from high school, when he joined his father in the car dealership business, Shaner Chevrolet. Rex’s brother, Bill, joined the business in 1940. The business was expanded to include an Oldsmobile agency in 1949 Rex’s involvement in the car business lasted for 48 years with his retirement from it in 1984. Rex and Bill attended the Reppert School of Auctioneering in 1941, and joined their father in the auction business soon after. Rex devoted 44 years of his life to his vocation. His commitment to auctioneering was a part of his life that he truly loved, an endeavor which went far beyond the aspect of it being a form of livelihood. An outgrowth of this profession was the building of the Geneva Sale Barn in 1933, a business owned by the Shaner family until its closing in 1983. Rex was a man who dearly enjoyed the interrelationship of dealing with the public. Rex’s outgoing personality, coupled with his joy of working with the public, allowed him to receive total satisfaction in his business life as a car dealer and auctioneer. On November 29, 1936, Rex was united in marriage to Nona I. Usher of Fairmont. To this union three daughters were born: Peggy Ann, Jo Ann and Barbara Ann. The family grew with the addition of three sons-in-law, five grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. Visits with Grandpa Rex were special. Family trips, gatherings and holidays were fun times for all. Rex and Nona truly enjoyed 52 years of married life. A very special part of Rex’s entire life was his involvement with the “Shooting Sports”, both as an avid participant and as an observer. In the earlier years, Rex emulated many of the Factory Exhibitions Shooters, notably those from Remington Arms and Winchester. After much practice, he became quite proficient in his own right, performing for family and friends. Although not well known, Rex was an excellent pistol shooter and attended many shoots over the years. In the late 1940’s, Rex turned his interest to trapshooting, a sport he rigorously pursued until his death. In June of 1981, Rex was inducted into the “Nebraska Trapshooting Hall of Fame,” after shooting his 100,00th registered 16-yard target earlier in the year. His contributions to the sport as participant, promoter and Calcutta auctioneer were greatly admired and appreciated by fellow trapshooters. At the induction ceremonies, Rex was asked for a history of his trapshooting career. In answer to this inquiry he said “I never made any history, I just enjoyed it all. I met a lot of nice people and a lot of good shooters.” It was the social aspect of the sport that was of primary importance to Rex. He also greatly enjoyed the outdoors and hunting with friends and family and the camaraderie seemed to be the common denominator. Given special prominence among the trophies displayed in his den, is a plaque with the following motto: “Do things for people—not to them,” and so he lived his life. Rex was a Veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater. He was a lifelong member of the Geneva United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Geneva Masonic lodge 79 AF & AM, Order of Eastern Star 180, Scottish Rite, Sesostris Shrine Temple, Nebraska Trapshooters Hall of Fame and the Geneva Gun Club. He was a life member of the Amateur Trapshooters Association, National Rifle Association and the Lincoln Gun Club. Rex was preceded in death by his parents, Iryl and Rose Shaner. He is survived by his wife, Nona; daughters, Peggy Oliva and husband, Richard of Geneva, Jo Ann Melton and husband, Jim, Barbara Rietsch and husband, Roger, all of Lincoln; five grandchildren, Richard R. and wife Annette Oliva, Robert Oliva, James and Jennifer Melton and Sara Rietsch; two great-granddaughters, Kayla and Courtney Oliva; brother, Kenneth “Bill” Shaner and wife, Blanche, of Geneva; and aunts, Mrs. Harold (Nellie) Behm, Mrs. Stella Manson and Mrs. Ruth Underwood. Funeral services were conducted from the United Methodist Church in Geneva on Monday, January 16, with the Rev. Cal Leeds officiating. Mrs. Norval Lomax accompanied Kelly Eich, who sang “How Great Thou Art” and “Amazing Grace.” Special selections by the family were “Stardust” and “Just a Closer Walk with Thee.” Those serving as pallbearers were Virgil Bieger, Robert Cellar, Norman Girmus, Dale Richards, Melvin Motis, and J.R.
