He entered the hospital January 14 and underwent surgery, from which he did not recover. Iryl R. Shaner, son of Steward and Milla (Warren) Shaner, was born in York county Nebraska, April 12, 1893. When still a small boy, the family moved to Overton, Neb., where he spent his boyhood. He moved to Geneva in 1914 and took up faring. The family moved to town in 1923. February 22, 1914 Iryl was united in marriage to Rose N. Owens of Geneva. To this union were born two sons, Rex, and Kenneth. Mr. and Mrs. Shaner first lived on a farm. He had started auctioneering as a youth at Overton, and he continued doing auctioneering when he came to Geneva. In the early 20's, along with his farming and auction business, he began selling autos for R. Tetard, getting his start in the auto business. In 1925, Iryl worked as a salesman for the Brown-Dixon Chevrolet Co. The next year he and R.O. Sigman bought the Brown_Dixon business and formed the S&S Chevrolet Co. In 1932 Mr. Shaner purchased his partner's interest in the business. He continue as a Chevrolet dealer 46 years. Mr. Shaner had been in the auctioneering business more than 60 years. He loved the work and was very successful in it. Douring his experience, he cried many sales of all kinds in the community. In the 30's and early 40's when sales were numerous, he would be booked steady from three to four months with sales every day except Sunday. He was called on many times for country school basket social sales and church sales, a service he rendered freely. Before the sons joined the firm, Mr. Shaner was associated with Loren Teter of Shickley several years and he also worked with George Schepers of Fairmont several years. Iryl worked with Bill Svoboda of Hebron. In 1941 the sons, Rex and Kenneth, after attending auction school, joined the firm in the auctioneering and garage business. In 1933 Mr. Shaner built the Geneva Sales which was a considerable asset to the community. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister Mrs. Richard (May) Smith. He is survived by his wife; two sons, Rex and Kenneth; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; brothers Harry, Charles, and Paul; three sisters,Mrs. Glenn Sigrest, Stella, and Nellie; as well as many relatives and a host of friends. Mr. Shaner was a member of the United Methodist church of Geneva more than 50 years., and was a regular attendee until his last illness. He was liberal in his contributions to all church projects.
