Description	:	Malvern friends were saddened the past week to hear of the death of Mrs. W. E. Burks which occurred at their home in Dallas, South Dakota, Saturday, December 3, after a brief illness. The remains were brought to Emerson Monday, accompanied by the husband and son John, and funeral services were held from the Baptist Church, 2:30 p.m. conducted by Rev. J. E. Wilkins assisted by the local pastor, Rev. W. J. Robinson. Interment was made in the Emerson cemetery by the side of her four children buried there. Mrs. Burks spent a good part of her life in Mills County, a large part of that time in Malvern and had a host of friends here who sorrow over the passing of this good woman. The following obituary was read at the services: Rhoda C. Burks was born in Davis County, Iowa, April 5, 1848 and died December 3, 1921 at Dallas, South Dakota. She was converted when a young girl uniting with the Christian Church of which she was a member until her death. She was united in marriage with William E. Burks in 1866. Three children were born to this union: Mary Maude, Charles Milton and John Harrison. Maude and Charlie preceded her in death many years ago. She was also a dear mother to two stepsons, George and Alvin, who preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband and youngest son John also by two grand children, Mrs. Gayle Jackson and William Burks, at home. One grandson Russell was killed in the World War in France. She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Arenea Linden of Scotts Bluffs, Nebr., and a brother William of Rapid City, S. D. She was a member of the W. R. C. of Emerson, Iowa, her father, Harrison Taylor having given his life for his country in the Civil War. She with her husband and children moved from Davis County, Iowa to Mills County, Iowa in 1871. For a number of years they lived on the old home farm in Deer Creek and then about 23 years ago moved up near Malvern and later into Malvern where they resided until a couple of years ago when they went to South Dakota to be near their son John. Coming to Mills County, when it was but a prairie, she suffered the hardships of a pioneer; but though all maintained a cheery disposition. To know her was to love her. She was of a home loving disposition and was never happier than when doing for her loved ones. Malvern Leader
