Burks former resident of Mills county, who died Sunday at Rapid City, S. D. The services were conducted by members of Silver Urn Masonic Lodge of Malvern. Burks former resident of Mills county, who died Sunday at Rapid City, S. D. The services were conducted by members of Silver Urn Masonic Lodge of Malvern. John Harrison Burks was born Oct. 13, 1872 south of Emerson, and was the youngest son of Wm. E. and Rhoda C. Burks. He was graduated from Western Normal College at Shenandoah and later attended Drake University in Des Moines. Coming to Malvern when a young man he was clerk in the Paddock store and was later a member of a real estate firm. He was married March 17, 1897 to Florence Maude Earcrett who preceded him in death March 15, 1931. They went to housekeeping on the Burks farm east of Strahan and there were born their three children: Mrs. Gayle Jackson now of Sturgis, S. D.; George William whose home is in Cheyenne, Wyo., and Charles Russell who was killed in action at Sergy, France, July 30, 1917. They lived for many years near Strahan and later on a farm near Malvern. In 1918 the family moved to Dallas, S. D. and later to Sturgis, S. D., which has since been their home. Mr. Burks held a responsible position as highway commissioner of Tripp County while at Winner. His daughter Gayle and son William and two grandchildren, Donald Jr. and Joan Jackson, survive him. He also leaves a host of friends, for his pleasant manner and genial friendliness reached the hearts of all who knew him.
