Rhoda Clementine Welch was born in Richmond, Indiana, June 20, 1830, and was the fourth of a family of twelve children. In 1829 her parents removed from North Carolina to Richmond, where they resided until 1831, when they removed to Tazewell county, Ill., where another daughter was born, now Mrs. America Betzer of Macon county, Illinois. Mr. and Mrs. Welch resided in Tazewell county with their family of five little girls only a short time. The country was but sparsely settled at that early day, and the family was constantly subjected to the dangers incident to all frontier settlements at that time, from roving bands of hostile Indians, and upon the breaking out of the Black Hawk War, were compelled to flee with their little family to Morgan county, leaving their earthly possessions behind. While residing in Morgan county their first son, Mathias S., now a resident of Oregon, was born, being the sixth. After a short residence in Morgan county the famiy removed to Alton, Illinois, and after a short residence in Alton removed to what is now Bonaparte, Iowa, on the Des Moines River, when that state was yet Wisconsin Territory. At this time that country was very sparsely settled, and being a long distance from a base of supply, the settlers were often without many of the necessaries of life, and the luxuries a thing unknown. The country was inhabited by large tribes of Indians, chiefly the Sacs and Foxes, and Mrs. Betzer often delighted her children with thrilling stories of these wild sons of the forest. The next move of the family was to Jefferson county, Iowa, and soon after, in 1841 or 1842, when the "new purchase" was opened up for settlement, the family removed to Marion county, Iowa, and settled down for good. During the ten or twelve years intervening between the time the family left Richmond and their settlement in Marion county, they were on the extreme frontier, constantly exposed to danger from roving bands of Indians. On April 29, 1858, the subject of this notice was married to James H. Betzer, in Pella, Iowa. She was the mother of six children, three sons and three daughters, all residing in Seward and Seward county, except for one son, William H., who died at the age of 18 months. Mrs. Betzer had been a faithful and consistent member of the Catholic church for forty years. She, like other members of the family, seemed to inherit the pious and kindly natures of her parents. Her family, who have felt the good influence of her gentle nature and pious teachings, know her true worth, and deeply feel the great loss they have sustained, yet the cruelty and shock of death seem to be lost sight of when we see the beautiful sunrise of life fading softly and beautifully into the night of death. Although the summons came suddenly, like a flash of light, she was ready and waiting. Her good deeds, like a sweet memory, will live after her. Hers was a noble character, her life made up of good deeds. The lowliest of God's creatures never went away from her door hungry. Being of an intensely sympathetic nature she often expressed the desire to be able to do more for the needy. She was strongly attached to domestic life, and was never so happy and contented as when surrounded by her family. We feel that words fail to do justice to the kind, gentle, loving wife and mother whose death has made a happy home desolate. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon, from the Catholic church, which was filled with sympathizing friends of the family. After the beautiful services of the church were concluded a large procession followed the remains to Greenwood cemetery, where they were laid to rest.
