Richard Allen was born in Manchester, England, April 5th, 1835, and died at Valley Falls, Kansas, January 7th, 1899. He came to this country in 1844 and located in Cleveland, Ohio, where he lived until 1854 when he moved to Iowa. In 1856 he came to Atchison, Kansas. In 1868 he took a homestead in Washington county. He lived there five years, then spent one year in Missouri, returning to this vicinity in 1874, where he has since resided. He was baptized into the Christian church by Pardee Butler in 1859, and united with the Christian church here about five years ago. He enlisted in the 1st Kansas in 1862 and received his discharge August 30th, 1865. He was married to Malinda Reynolds and to them ten children were born, seven sons and three daughters. One son and one daughter preceded him to the home above. Another old citizen has passed to the great beyond leaving a sorrowing family and a wide circle of sincere friends to mourn his departure. And now that he is gone, tears will fill our eyes as we remember his gentle and lovable nature, just as the smiles always came to our lips while he was with us, whenever we thought of the good natured wit and unfailing humor that made his most trivial conversation something to remember. It was impossible to talk with him without being moved to hearty, healthy laughter. Unusually intelligent and well read, his comments on everything, from the political situation to his own afflictions, were always bright and just to the point, and so mirth-provoking that his hearers laughed with him, though there was sometimes a pathos in his persistent looking on the bright side that almost brought the tears. Those of us who enjoyed his friendship during the trying days of the early seventies can best appreciate the worth of his never failing cheerfulness. Viewed through his eyes, drouth and grasshoppers were only a part of the passing show, and quite amusing and instructive in their way, and hearts that were dismayed at the gloomy prospects took new courage from his brave hopefulness and lived to see his sunny prophecies fulfilled. He endured the two years of suffering, that preceded his death, with cheerful fortitude, his only anxiety being for the comfort of the loved ones who watched at his bedside. As a citizen he was respected by all, and during his residence in Valley Falls he filled several responsible offices. He was a member of the A.O.U.W. and his funeral was conducted by the fraternity according to the ritual of their order, after a sermon at the Christian church by Rev. Blalock. He was laid to rest beside his daughter Maude in the old cemetery, near his late residence. By his death the family loses a loving husband and father and the community an honorable and upright citizen.
