Merchen died Monday, February 24, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Society, Bloomfield, Nebraska. Richard was born September 26, 1925 at Crofton, Nebraska to Bessie Mabel (Parsons) Merchen and Otto Phillip Merchen. Richard went to grade school at Weigand, West Blyville and New Home near Crofton and a rural school three miles north of Bloomfield. Richard left Bloomfield High School during his freshman year due to a loss of transportation and the need to help on the family farm. Richard enlisted in the Army to join in the fight in World War II. His induction date was February 10, 1945. He was stationed in the Philippines and in Japan. He was assigned to the 16th Communication Squadron and given the responsibility of protecting the American Indian Communications personnel. He was also certified at driving a variety of heavy trucks. Richard mustered out as a Corporal on December 8, 1946 with an Honorable Discharge and given the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal. After his service, Richard returned to northeast Nebraska and rented the family farm. He was also employed in Bloomfield at the Bud Zimmerman welding shop and drove truck for the building of Gavins Point Dam. He went on to work in California at an airplane factory where he lived with an uncle. With money saved he returned to Bloomfield where he and Bud Zimmerman built the first cable stack mover in the area. Richard then moved to Idaho to work for Uniroyal who at the time furnished the tires for the heavy equipment being used on a number of dam construction projects. Continuing to work for Uniroyal he was relocated to Portland, Oregon. Then he transitioned to driving for Fred Meyer Supermarket for 13 years. He joined the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Chauffeurs, Warehousemen and Helpers of America. He retired June 4, 1981 returning to the family farm. On December 1, 2006 Richard moved into Bloomfield to the Mainview Apartments due to vision problems. He sought full time care in July 2013 first from Avera Care Center in Creighton and finally at Good Samaritan Society in Bloomfield before yielding his 88-year life to Advanced Parkinsons disease. In his younger years Richard enjoyed the outdoor sports of hunting elk and deer, fishing and target shooting as well as driving in stock car races. Later in life, his interests consisted of displaying his small engines at area threshing bees along with participating in tractor pulls and being a follower of NASCAR racing. Richard is survived by his sister Maxine Mormann and husband John, Crofton, Nebraska; his brothers Don and wife Crystal, Petersburg, Nebraska and Dale, Harrisburg, Oregon and close friend Bernice Schneider, Bloomfield, Nebraska and five nieces and nephews. Richard is pre-deceased by his parents Otto and Bessie, and brother Gene. In lieu of memorials, the family requests that contributions be made to the cemetery maintenance fund.
