His death certificate, WWI and WWII draft registration cards all report 1893. In the 1900 census, he is listed as 10 years old and in the 1920 census, 20 years ago. A December 1890 article in the "The Lima Daily News" (Lima, OH) reports "Zack's wife having left him." and further reports that his [Zack's] future wife, Mrs. Dan Bickel, was living with him. This means that Richard's mother had already left his father and Richard was born before December 1890. Based on his ages in the early census, 1890 seems most probably for his year of birth. ----- The following obituary appeared in "The Lima News" (Lima, OH) on Tuesday, May 27, 1952, page 2, column 1: Janitor Found Dead in Tavern Richard Edinger, 53 [sic], of 20 1/2 Public-sq, an employe of Duffy's tavern, 20 Public-sq, was found dead at 5:30 a. m. Tuesday, lying face down behind the tavern bar. Edinger, who usually swept and cleaned during the early morning hours, was found dead after he failed to open the door at 5:30 a. m. for C. E. Baker, the tavern's operator. Police who investigated, said there was apparently no evidence of foul play, but Dr. T. J. Talbott, Allen-co coroner, said he would withhold a verdict pending an autopsy. Edinger was born in Richmond, Pa., but had lived in Lima a number of years. Surviving are three brothers, Nelson J., rear of 1208 S. Main-st; Scott S., Bluffton, and Samuel, in Illinois; three [sic] sisters, Miss Odessa Edinger, 117 1/2 E. Elm-st, and Mrs. Marie Wolfgang, Cleveland. The body will remain in the Davis Miller funeral home pending funeral arrangements.
