BARNEY, RICHARD DONALD DON--Richard Don Barney was born March 11, 1921, to Harold and Lena Barney at the farm home near Strang, neb., and died August 3, 1976, at the Veteran’s hospital, Lincoln, Neb., at the age of 54 years, 4 months, 22 days. He was united in marriage to Iola Moell, December 5, 1948, at Carleton, Neb. Five children were born to this union. He graduated from Shickley public school and enlisted in the 14th Armored Infantry Division during World War II. He received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart award. After his discharge, he settled in Shickley and operated a well drilling business until his appointment to postmaster in 1959. He was always civic minded and gave many hours of his free time to make a community a better place. His favorite projects were the ball park, public library and the Legion building. He held a certificate from American Radio Relay League. He was a licensed ham radio operator. He served on town council, community council and fire department. He was a member of the Legion and the United Methodist church. He was preceded in death by his father. Those who cherish his memory are his wife, Iola, and mother, Lena Barney; three sons, David and wife, Trudy, Rodney and wife Rene, Steve and wife Cindy; two daughters, Donna and husband, Tom Rosener, of Lincoln, Neb., and Melodie; one sister Faye and husband, Don Schilmiller, of Villa Park, Ill.; three grandchildren, Shane and Shelly Barney and Jason Rosener. A host of relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Friday, August 6, at the United Methodist church in Shickley, with Rev. Olin Belt officiating. Richard Rosenquist sang “Beyond the Sunset” and “In the Garden,” accompanied by Mrs. Verlie Zetterman. Pallbearers were Donald Graul, Robert Schilmiller, Roland Kassebaum, Richard Trapp, Donald Schilmiller and William Trapp. Military graveside services were held at the Geneva cemetery with Shickley American Legion in charge.
