Description	:	The history of the Curoe family of the Bernard-Fillmore area begins in Linisamore, County of Down, Ireland, where William Curoe was born on May 28, 1822. William’s parents died when he was two years old and the young boy was taken in and raised by the Very Rev. Richard Curoe. A brief history of Rev. Curoe should be included here. Read More	The history of the Curoe family of the Bernard-Fillmore area begins in Linisamore, County of Down, Ireland, where William Curoe was born on May 28, 1822. William’s parents died when he was two years old and the young boy was taken in and raised by the Very Rev. Richard Curoe. A brief history of Rev. Curoe should be included here. He was born in 1742 in Ballyngarrick in the Parish of Kilclief. He graduated from the College of Lombard’s, Paris, France; and was ordained in the priesthood on March 14, 1773. He served a short time as a curate in Bright before he was appointed to the Parish of Ballyykiniar on March 17, 1778. On January 12, 1780 he was transferred to the Parish of Kilmore where he served his flock for more than 64 years. “The old priest” as he was familiarly called, died at his home in Linisamore on June 31, 1844. He had lived to the grand age of 102. Rev. Richard Curoe was laid to rest in the chapel yard of Kilclief. William Curoe came to America at the age of twenty-two and settled in Bangor, Maine. In 1850 he returned to Ireland where he married Sarah Flynn. The young couple returned to America and came directly to Garryowen. Both are buried in the Garryowen Cemetery. Sarah died at the age of 60, on February 17, 1884. The family farm went to Richard E. Curoe, when on September 30, 1886 he married Theresa McLaughlin, in St. Patrick’s Church, Garryowen. (Theresa was born June 1, 1866, the daughter of James McLaughlin and Mary. After the death of Richard Curoe on March 9, 1934, the family farm went to Eldon Curoe. Eldon married Genevieve Donovan and they were the parents of: Louis, Kathleen, Patrick and Mary Jo. Eldon passed away on February 22, 1948 at the age of forty nine.
