Published on December 24, 2008. _______________Funeral home obit Richard Edward Kiepke, son of Joseph and Josephine (Johns) Kiepke, was born on the family farm near Centerville, SD on November 13, 1919. As a young boy, Richard attended Midway School until the 8th grade. Following his school, Richard helped his father on the family farm. He was then drafted into the United States Army in 1941. He was stationed at Camp Roberts, CA until war was declared when he went to Arizona to guard the border for six months. Richard was then moved to Fort Knox, KY where he trained before leaving for overseas. While overseas, Richard was in Africa where he was stationed with a tank moving company for six months. He then moved to Italy with his company and fought at the Anzio Beachhead. Following his time in Italy, his unit traveled to the south of France where they cleared the forest for the tanks to travel and also helped build the bridge from Marseille to Switzerland. During his time in the forest he was shot and wounded and was sent back to Topeka, KS. Richard then returned to Centerville where he met Marian Harrington. The couple was married on October 27, 1945 in Centerville, SD and lived on a farm just outside of town. In 1946, they moved to Sioux Falls where Richard began working for Locke Electric. In 1961, Richard started his own business, Speedometer Auto Electric, which he operated until he retired in 1982. Richard was very good with his hands and could fix anything you put in front of him. In his free time, Richard enjoyed the bike trails in Sioux Falls, dancing, playing cards (especially the card games in Beresford), traveling, listening to Polka music, and spending time with his family. He was a loving father; a wonderful grandfather; and a great friend to all who knew him. He will be greatly missed. Grateful for having shared his life are his daughters, Judy (Karolewicz) Kiepke and Jill Morman; 5 grandchildren, Richie and Tony Tulio, Tami Schwartz, Mari Hernandez and Larry Morman; 5 great-grandchildren, Ryan and Sheldon Tulio, Loreta Hernandez, Brooke Schwartz, and Rayn Hernandez, all of Sioux Falls; sister, Ardis Jorgensen, Lennox, SD; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Lloyd and Joyce Peterson, Beresford, SD and VerDell and Loreen Andal, Centerville, SD. Richard is preceded in death by his parents; Joseph and Josephine Kiepke; wife, Marian; daughter, JoAnn; son-in-law, Paul Karolewicz, brothers, Leland and Eldon Kiepke; and sisters, Opal Christenson, Gertrude Anderson, Thelma Wiebers and Evelyn Frank.
