Our father, Richard, a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, died on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 at Licking Memorial Hospital. He was born in Newark on May 20, 1927 to the late Richard and Margaret (Harvey) Stokes. He lived a life full of friends and family, Richard was a parishioner of the Church of the Blessed Sacrament where he was a member of the Holy Name Society and a dedicated volunteer for many church and school related activities. Richard was awarded as a Grand Knight, Trustee and Advocate with the Knights of Columbus and he was also recognized as Treasurer of outstanding service for the Heath Lions Club. Richard was a United States Army Veteran, having served in WWII and the Korean War. He was retired from the Ohio Department of Transportation where he was a project engineer for many years. Richard is survived by his wife of 53 years, Rose Marie (Soliday) Stokes of the home, his sons and daughter-in-law, Rick and Terry Stokes of Newark, Donald Stokes of Newark, and William Stokes of Heath; his daughters and son-in-law, Colleen and Colin Ward of Florida, and Peggy Stokes of Prairie Village, Kansas, and; 6 grandchildren, Christopher, Andrea, and Colin Mandrick, and Daniel, Michael, and James Stokes; his brothers and sister-in-law, Robert and Shirley Stokes of Heath; his sister, JoAnn Wilson; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by two infant sons, his brother, Ronald Stokes, and his sister, Colleen Stokes. Friends and family may call from 5-8 P.M. Friday, October 13, 2006, at the Reed-Egan Funeral Home, 141 Green Wave Drive, Newark, where a Lions Service will be held at 7 P.M., and a Vigil Service will be held at 7:30 P.M.. Please come and share in the memory of Richard's great smiles and laughter that have touched so many over the years. He would love to see you again to wish him well on his continued journey.
