Andrews, 5-20-1909 "RICHARD GAULT" "Son of Francis and Deborah (Stewart-Gault), born Belfast, Ireland, Aug 21, 1830, Came to Philadelphia, Pa., with his parents when seven years old, where he learned the cutlery trade. The family moved to Wisconsin in 1851 :thence to Appanoose County in 1853. Mr Gault came to Hamlin's Grove the following year, where he worked for Mr. Hamlin and was his assistant in the office of Treasurer and Recorder: Clerk of the District court, 1861-2. Herrick bought the farm from his father-in-law, Alvin Herrick in sections 8 and 9 Exira Township, and soon after locating in this county he secured a large, fine body of timber and prairie in Gault's Grove, afterwards, called Luccock's Grove in Leroy Township. In the spring of 1866 he and Julius M. Hubbard made the first settlement in this grove, which was sold soon afterwards and settled by Christopher D. Luccock, O.H.P. Roberts, Robert and James Miller, all well known in our old settlers. Mr. Gault returned to his farm at Exira." "He married May 1, 1860, Mary Leffingwell, daughter of Alvin and Paulina Leffingwell-Herrick, born in Mass. (perhaps Westfield) about 1832, who died Aug. 11, 1877. Mr. Gault never remarried but devoted the remainder of his life to his children, living on the farm until they married, and afterwards lived in Exira with his children. Democrat, Member of Exira Lodge, K.P. He died April 13, 1904, leaving a good estate to his children. Children, born Audubon County: Henry Franklin, m. Dora Smth and Melissa Cook. Augustus Collins,m.
