His family includes his wife of over 64 years, Helen Vos of University Park; a son, Blaine(Joan)Vos; three daughters, Vivian Vos(Greg Picchione), Valerie Spaur(Tracy)and Jy Bowman(Dan); six grandchildren, Nena Spaur, Stephanie Spaur, Rebekah Spaur Means(Ryan), DeVante Vos, Skyler Bowman and Shenelle Vos; a brother, Glen(Rita)Vos; and fifteen nieces and nephews. Richard Gene Vos, the son of James and Lois Waltz Vos was born January 13, 1925, in Pella, Iowa. He graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1943. Following graduation he attended William Penn College. His course of study was put on hold when he was drafted into the United States Army. Gene served his country in Korea, during the Korean Conflict. He was discharged with the rank of Sargent from the Army. He returned to college and earned his teaching certificate from Colorado State Teacher's College in Colorado. He later earned his Master of Education degree from the University of Iowa. Gene taught school in Burlington, Colorado, Chariton, Iowa and Marshalltown, Iowa. He was a member of the Gateway Church of the Nazarene in Oskaloosa. Funeral services will be held Monday, November 24, 2014, at 10:30 am in the Bates Funeral Chapel with Reverends Blaine Vos and Ralph Sprunk officiating. Burial will be in the University Park Cemetery in University Park. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements where visitation will begin Sunday after 11 am and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 5-7 Sunday evening to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to Gateway Church of the Nazarene.
