Description	:	Rev. James William "Jim" Vos, age 89, of White River, South Dakota, died February 12, 2011, at the White River Health Care Center in White River. James William, the first son of James W. and Lois (Waltz) Vos, was born January 3, 1922. He grew up on a farm in the Dutch Community of Pella, Iowa, with his two younger brothers, roaming the outdoors and attending school. Read More	Rev. James William "Jim" Vos, age 89, of White River, South Dakota, died February 12, 2011, at the White River Health Care Center in White River. James William, the first son of James W. and Lois (Waltz) Vos, was born January 3, 1922. He grew up on a farm in the Dutch Community of Pella, Iowa, with his two younger brothers, roaming the outdoors and attending school. The family left the farm in 1936 and moved to Oskaloosa, where Jim graduated from high school in 1939. He then worked and attended college in Oskaloosa, before volunteering for military service in 1942. Following basic training, he was stationed at South Dakota State College in the Army Specialized Training Program where he first met his future wife, Doris Brooking. He was sent to Europe in 1945 serving through the end of the war; ending his service with the occupational forces in Japan. Jim was honorably discharged in March 1946. Upon his return home, he attended Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa. A year later he and Doris were married on June 23, 1947. He graduated college in 1948 before returning to Onida and the Brooking family farm, working with Doris' brother James Brooking. Through all the years of his life, the land and spirit of farming were never far from his heart. But neither was his church, and he decided to enter the ministry of the South Dakota Methodist Church in 1956. His first appointment was The Little Brown Church in Hayes-Kirley. He eventually served parishes in Philip-Quinn; Conde-Andover; Clear Lake-Gary; White River-Mission-Wood; and Selby-Lowry. In 1985, he and Doris returned to the banks of the Little White River to enjoy a very busy and activity filled retirement. He continued his work in the Church and outside its walls. In 2006 he was recognized as a Jubilee Clergy, marking 50 years in Christ's Church. Jim was active in many community activities everywhere he lived. The Lion's Club, the Historical Society, Masonic Lodge, and Eastern Star all enjoyed his involvement. He served as president of the South Dakota Mental Health Association and served as the Chaplain for the South Dakota American Legion from 1986-1988. He is survived by his wife, Doris; his children Rebecca (Joseph) Dougherty, Cheyenne, WY; Andrew (Jodi Hanson) Vos, Sioux Falls, SD; Phillip (Joyce) Vos, Sioux Falls, SD; Martha (Byron) Janke, Rockford, IL; and Phoebe (Dan) Krogman, White River, SD. Grandchildren include Lance (Karen) Hart, Hunter, Tayva, and Caden; Chevon Logsdon; Jessica (Jonathan) Lueking and Brynn; Adam Vos; Jason (Heather) Olson, Jeremiah, Brayden, and Madison; Chrystelle (Michael) Andrews, Tristan and Alyssa; Chelsey Janke; Kristan, Richelle, and Carson Krogman; Misty (Delbert) Black Bear, Trevin and Gavin; Siri and Anya Svanoe; Michael, Marco, and Charlie Logsdon; Dan Dougherty, Alexis and Zoe; and Erin Roberts, Noah and Gabby; two brothers, Gene (Helen) Vos, and Glen (Rita) Vos, Oskaloosa, IA; sister-in-law Ruby Brooking, Pierre, SD; and many nieces and nephews and their families who have shared in his life. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Darin Hart; and son-in-law, William Logsdon. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 16, at the White River Community Events Center, with Pastor Linda Baldock officiating. Interment with military honors will be held at the White River Cemetery.
