Description	:	Richard H. Popelka, 86, passed away Monday, Jan. 1, 2007, at home, surrounded by his four children. Richard was born Feb. 14, 1920, in Billings, to Edna and Henry Popelka. He graduated from Billings Senior High School in 1938. He met Dorothy Walter at a local dance and they were later united in marriage on Jan. 12, 1941, sharing 59 wonderful years together. Richard was born Feb. 14, 1920, in Billings, to Edna and Henry Popelka. He graduated from Billings Senior High School in 1938. He met Dorothy Walter at a local dance and they were later united in marriage on Jan. 12, 1941, sharing 59 wonderful years together. Dancing continued to be a joy throughout their lives. Out of this union were born five children: Dickie, Judy, Pat, Karen and Bob. Richard was drafted into the Navy in 1943, serving on the USS Strong. After the war, while working on the family dairy, he purchased an old army surplus truck, which was the beginning of Star Transfer Trucking. The business was sold years later to Milwaukee Motor Transport. His devotion to trucking led him to rebuild a smaller truck fleet called Popelka Trucking. Soon thereafter, he made the decision to concentrate more on his real estate investments. His love of work and entrepreneurial endeavors soon led him to become a substantial real estate developer in Billings and the surrounding areas. C& D Warehouse, Popelka Enterprises and Four Seasons Shopping Center were just a few of his major real estate challenges. Richard and Dorothy raised their family in Billings Heights. They then moved to the ranch in Red Lodge, where they raised registered Shorthorn cattle and registered Quarter Horses for 22 years. Horses were always a huge part of Richard's life. He was a lifetime member of the Billings Saddle Club, a Trail Blazer (37 years) of the Nile, a member of the American Quarter Horse Association and also the Moose Lodge. While on the ranch, he raised reining and cutting horses, one of which was reserve world champion cutting horse in 1987 (Montana Lynx). He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy; and his son, Dickie. Survivors include daughters Judy Kirkland and Pat Sanford of Billings, Karen (Doug) Boylan of Bozeman; son Robert (Jamie) of Billings; two sisters, Mavis Daviau of Joliet and Alice Rimpe of Billings; 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Dad, The values that you lived by have become our lives today. We thank you for that - for your strength, your dedication, your honesty and integrity, your wonderful values and your strong work ethics. Most of all, we cherish the love you gave each and every one of us. We will miss you dearly - our lives will never be the same, but you will live within us each and every day. You may be leaving this earthly world, but you will be in our hearts forever. We take comfort in knowing you and Mom will now be dancing together in heaven! Your loving family Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, at Smith's Downtown Chapel, 925 S. 27th St. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Viewing will be Thursday, Jan. 4, from noon to 9 p.m., and prior to services at Smith Downtown Chapel.
