Funeral services will be 9:45 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 6 in the chapel of Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home and 10:30 a.m. at St Joseph's Church, Barnum with Rev. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, where there will be a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 6:30 p.m. a vigil at 7 p.m. Surviving is his wife, Gloria; son, Jay Collins and his wife Tracy of Barnum; daughters, Mary Gardalen and her husband Marlyn, Diane Blomker and her husband Bill, Kathleen Kesterson and her husband Jim, Denise McAnally and her husband Mike, Maureen Crimmins and her husband Denny, all of Fort Dodge; daughter-in-laws, Kay Collins of Barnum, Carol Frisina of Gastonia, NC; 18 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; brothers, Raymond Collins of Scranton, John Collins of Rockwell City. He was preceded in death by his parents, Maurice and Rose (McCoy) Collins; sons, Steven and David Collins; granddaughter, Terri Gardalen: and a brother, Francis Collins. Richard J. Collins was born March 4, 1927 in Lohrville, Iowa. He was raised and educated in Lohrville, graduating from Lohrville High School in 1944. He served with the Army Air Force during WWII in the Philippine Islands from 1944 until his honorable discharge in 1947. He then returned home and began farming. On February 21, 1949 he was united in marriage to Gloria Johnston at St. Joseph Church in Lohrville and they established their home on a farm near Barnum. Richard farmed for over 50 years until his retirement in 1997 when they moved to Fort Dodge. He was a member of Holy Trinity Parish, the Knights of Columbus Council 613, and the Webster County Cattlemen Association. He served on the education board at the Northwest Webster School System for several years. Dick enjoyed playing cards at the Knights of Columbus Hall, golfing, and spending time with his grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to the Knights of Columbus.
