Dick was born on July 25, 1931, in Trenton, Neb., to Andrew and Mabel Buhler. At the age of 4, the family moved to Washington, where he attended Kelso schools through the 10th grade. Dick was a logger, entrepreneur and businessman, who worked with Weyerhaeuser Timber as well as various other timber companies. In November of 1958, he married Betty Ann Beck and they made their home in Kelso. In 1974, Dick moved his family to Southeast Alaska, where he started Silver Bay Logging (SBL) Company. Over the years, SBL moved and had many different logging camps throughout southeast Alaska, (including sites in Sitka, South Kelp Bay, Crab Bay, Eight Fathom Bight, Cube Cove, Yakutat, Afognak and Montague), along with many other floating sites and temporary camps. Throughout five decades, SBL grew to be one of the largest privately owned timber companies as well as one of the largest and most efficient logging companies. It was the fifth largest heavy lift operation in Alaska, often using helicopters to log the land without building any road systems. During the height of the company, the Wrangell, Alaska, sawmill was purchased and the main offices were relocated to that location. After 45-plus of prosperous logging, Dick enjoyed semi-retirement on his ranch in Kelso, until his passing on Saturday. He is survived by his wife, Betty Ann Buhler at home; four children, Richard J. Buhler Jr., (Georgianna) of Wrangell, Kevin Buhler (Debbie) of Emmett, Idaho, and Maxine Buhler and Duane L. Buhler, both of Vancouver, Wash.; five grandchildren, Candace Buhler, Jason Buhler, Kimberly Davis, Jessica Buhler and Erin Buhler; three great-grandchildren; two siblings, Duane E. Buhler (Loveta) of Nampa, Idaho, and Lila Buhler of Des Moines, Wash.; four sisters-in-law, Debbie and Sandra Beck, Loveta Buhler and Penny Buhler; several nieces and nephews; as well as all the children he helped throughout the years. Dick was preceded in death by his father, Andrew Buhler; his mother, Mabel Buhler-Remington; his stepfather, Alfred Remington; a brother, Melvin Buhler; a sister, Neva Johnson; a niece; and a nephew. A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. today at Raineer Assembly of God, 74950 Rock Crest St., in Raineer with pastors Duane and Nick Buhler officiating. A reception will follow. A viewing is planned from noon to service time at the church. A graveside service is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at Cowlitz View Memorial, 1535 Mt. Brynion Road, in Kelso.
