His obituary in the Carroll Chronicle, Carrollton, Ohio, Friday, December 14, 1906. Richard Kelley, an old and much respected citizen of Perry Township, Carroll County, Ohio, was a son of Phillip and Mary Kelley, born December 15, 1833, at the old homestead one mile north of Perrysville, and departed this life December 8, 1906, aged 72 years, 11 months and 23 days. His ailment was cancer of the stomach. He rejoined the Methodist Episcopal Church of Perrysville during the winter of 1885, under the ministry of Rev. Stevens, and was a faithful and devout member of the same until his death. He was regular and punctual in his attendance. June 2, 1864, he was married to Dorinda Rutledge of Union Township. To this union were born three children, Mary Auretta, married to James McClave of East Springfield, Ohio, Laura Jane, married to B. H. Fisher and Carrie May to Henry Hendrix. There are five grandchildren living, Otto, Laura and Wilfred McClave; Doyle Hendrix and Zelda Fisher. One brother, James, is yet living. Three of his brothers and two sisters have departed this life. He was an Israelite indeed--a man of prayer, of faith, of deeds--a man of God. His life was consistent and influential for good, worthy of imitation and deserving of eulogy. He held the office of trustee in the church for several years, and was class leader at the time of his death. When he learned the malignity of his affliction his friends marveled at his peacefulness and composure. His beloved wife kindly and patiently administered to him until the summons came to him in the still watches of the night, saying to him: "Well done, thou good and faithful servant! Enter thou in to the joy of the Lord." The family had been at the bedside for several weeks and were present when the end came. In politics he was an ardent supporter of democratic principles of john M. Pattison type. He was trustee and assessor of the township, and had been on the jury commission. His was an instance of the office seeking the man--he never having asked a man to support him for any office. He was a continued paid-up subscriber to the Chronicle ever since its origin. In his death the county loses a foremost citizen; the church a model member; the community a kind and obliging neighbor; the family an affectionate husband and dear father. His pastor visited him many times, and when he asked what passage of scripture he should read for him, he replied: "Any is good enough for me." Dallas Logan, John Swinehart, Albert Butterfield, Harvey Brower, Charles Davidson and John Butterfield acted as pall bearers, and G. H. Atwell was undertaker. He was laid to rest Monday, December 10, in the Methodist Cemetery, Revs. Nulton and Coder officiating. NOTE--there is a picture of him in the original obituary.
