Jastram was born June 9, 1925 to Louis and Helen (Muchow) on a farm in Wall Lake Township, rural Sioux Falls, SD. He was baptized, confirmed, and married at Trinity Lutheran Church, Hartford, SD. He attended Washington High School. He was proud of his military service as a paratrooper for the 82nd Airborne from 1945 to 1947. On August 22, 1948, Richard was united in marriage with Mary Hooshagen in Hartford, SD. He was an electrician for John Morrell & Co. for 30 years, retiring in 1985. Richard was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church. He taught Sunday school, served on many boards and committees, and enjoyed singing in the church choir. Richard was a volunteer fire fighter for the Sioux Falls Splitrock Volunteer Fire Department for 24 years. He enjoyed gardening and helping others with his community garden spots that he rented for many years. He tilled gardens and lawns and will always be remembered for his lawn mowing tractor and custom yard attachments that he built. Richard enjoyed time in his machine shop and could fix or repair almost anything. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Rev. Robert Jastram, two infant daughters, and one infant son. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Sioux Falls Lutheran School.
