Description	:	OBITUARY - Plain Dealer, Wabash (IN) Richard Lawrence "Dick" Miller, 86, former Wabash businessman and Wabash City mayoral candidate, Albion, died at 10:25 a.m. Monday, Aug. 14, 2006, at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. Mr. Miller owned Dick's Men's Wear in Wabash from 1944-1971. In 1955, with the approval of Tony Hulman, president/CEO of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Mr. Miller started a $1,000 wardrobe prize to the winner of the Indianapolis 500, on the condition the winner arrived at his Wabash store to collect the prize the same week of the race. Read More	OBITUARY - Plain Dealer, Wabash (IN) Richard Lawrence "Dick" Miller, 86, former Wabash businessman and Wabash City mayoral candidate, Albion, died at 10:25 a.m. Monday, Aug. 14, 2006, at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. Mr. Miller owned Dick's Men's Wear in Wabash from 1944-1971. In 1955, with the approval of Tony Hulman, president/CEO of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Mr. Miller started a $1,000 wardrobe prize to the winner of the Indianapolis 500, on the condition the winner arrived at his Wabash store to collect the prize the same week of the race. He continued this prize until 1971. Mr. Miller also held banquets for Wabash residents to attend after the winner's store visit, plus a reception for various winners at his home. Mr. Miller was the public relations director of Provimi Veal Co., Waukesha, Wis., and hospitality director for Provimi Veal Auto Racing Team. He also was associated with race car driver Arie Luyendyk, two-time winner of the Indianapolis 500, for 17 years in many capacities. He also spent five years with Newman-Haas Racing Team drivers Mario and Michael Andretti and National CART champion Nigel Mansel. He was the promotional director for the City of Wabash under Mayor Robert McCallen and also for the Town of North Manchester. He worked for Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service for five years. Mr. Miller was the Republican candidate for mayor of Wabash in 1984. He received the Sagamore of the Wabash in 2003 from Gov. Joe Kernan. He was a former president of the Wabash Retail Division of the Wabash Area Chamber of Commerce and was one of the originators of Canal Days. He was the grand marshal of the 1990 Canal Days parade and the grand marshal of the 2006 Strawberry Fest parade. He was a former president, chairman of the board and life member of the Indianapolis 500 Oldtimers Club. He was a former member of the Indiana Retail Men's Wear Association and a life member of the Elks Lodge. He was a past president of the Wabash Rotary Club and the American Heart Association, Wabash Chapter. He was a member of the 500 Festival Associates, Wabash and North Manchester historical societies and the Wabash Presbyterian Church. He also was a charter member of the United States Auto Club, Novi Motorsports Hall of Fame, Championship Auto Racing, Indianapolis 500 Hall of Fame Selection Committee and the Vintage Car Club. He also was an Indiana high school basketball official for six years. Mr. Miller was born on April 5, 1920, in Wabash, to Dwayne and Mary (Holdermann) Miller. He married Mary Jane Martin on Aug. 19, 1944, at St. Bernard Catholic Church. He graduated from Wabash High School in 1938 and also from Kahn Tailoring Company, Indianapolis. Surviving are his wife, Mary Jane Miller, Albion; two daughters, Jane Ann (Don) Marteeny, Holly, Mich., and Mary Kathryn (Stan) Tipton, Albion; a brother, John W. "Jack" (Mary Alice) Miller, Wabash; six grandchildren, Benjamin Tipton, Indianapolis, Jay Tipton, Maggie Tipton and Colin Tipton, all of Albion, Dana (Damon) Sefa, Buffalo, N.Y., and Dawn (Matt) Fulton, Grand Blanc, Mich.; and great-grandchildren, Hayley, Ally Jane and Kate Fulton, Grand Blanc, Mich., and Tristen and Ella Jane Sefa, Buffalo, N.Y. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 18, 2006, at the Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service, Wabash Chapel. The Rev. Michael Dunkelberger will officiate. Burial will be in Falls Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17. Preferred memorials are to the Wabash County Historical Museum.
