Kirwin, Salina, a compositor at the Salina Journal, died unexpectedly at his home Saturday morning. Death was attributed to a heart attack. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Downey, and was born at Glasco April 10, 1904. Mr. Downey lived in Salina prior to 1950 and left in that year to go to Great Bend. He worked there 2 1/2 years, returning to Salina in June, 1953. He had been employed by The Journal since. He is survived by the widow, Goldie, of the home; two daughters, Mrs. A. H. Bross, Salina, and Helen Joan Downey of the home; two sons, Richard Gerald and Howard Dick, of the home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Downey, Glasco; two brothers, John V. and Joe F. Downey, both of Glasco; and three sisters, Mrs. Mary Johnson and Mrs. Irene Martin, both of Glasco, and Mrs. Marguerite Houchin, Solomon; and one grandchild. He was a member of the Roman Catholic church, the Eagles lodge and the International Typographical Union. The casket was brought to the McDonald Funeral Home in Glasco where friends could call. A Rosary service was held Monday evening. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, with Father James Grennan as officiant. Interment was in St. Mary's cemetery at Glasco.
