Richard attended country school and graduated from Graettinger High School in 1939. Dick served in the United States Army, serving one year in Okinawa during World War II. He was awarded the Purple Heart during his time of service. Read More	* IN LOVING MEMORY OF * Richard "Dick" Miller was born on Sunday; July 3, 1921 in Saint Peter; Nicollet County, Minnesota. He was the son of: Peter and Dagmar Rebecca (Anderson) Miller. Richard attended country school and graduated from Graettinger High School in 1939. Dick served in the United States Army, serving one year in Okinawa during World War II. He was awarded the Purple Heart during his time of service. On Wednesday; September 25, 1940, Dick was united in marriage to Martha Hansen at the Little Brown Church in Nashua; Chickasaw County, Iowa. To this union five children were born. In 1946, at the age of twenty four, Dick was elected as County Sheriff, making him the youngest sheriff ever in the state of Iowa. He served in this capacity for twenty six years. Dick owned and operated Miller Insurance and Real Estate until his retirement. Dick was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg; Palo Alto County, Iowa. He was a member of V.F.W. Post #2295 and American Legion for over sixty years. He had served as past president of the Iowa Sheriff's Association. Dick was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and he enjoyed bowling. What he enjoyed most in life was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Dick will be remembered by them as their "Funny Grandpa" as he always had a positive spirit, lots of laughs and a twinkle in his eye. Richard "Dick" Miller, age 88, passed away on Tuesday; February 23, 2010 at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg, Iowa. Those left to mourn his passing are: His wife: Martha of Emmetsburg, Iowa; his children: Ron Miller of Long Boat Key, Florida; Lorraine (David) Naig of Emmetsburg, Iowa; Sandi (Ron) Chapman of Emmetsburg, Iowa; Gregory (Ardella) Miller of Nauvoo, Illinois and Richard (Sheila) Miller of Waterloo, Iowa. His fourteen grandchildren and twenty two great grandchildren. His sister: Lavonne Johnson of Eyota, Minnesota and his sister-in-law: Betty Miller of Emmetsburg, Iowa. Also several nieces, nephews; and many other relatives and friends. Richard was preceeded in death by his parents; four brothers: LeRoy, Ervin, Carman and Martin Miller. Also his sister: Florence Wichman. May they rest in peace. Visitation will be from: 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday; February 26, 2010 at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg, Iowa. Funeral services will begin at: 1:00 p.m. on Saturday; February 27, 2010 at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg, Iowa. Interment will be at the South Walnut Cemetery in Graettinger; Palo Alto County, Iowa. Arrangements by Martin-Mattice Funeral Home.
