He married Magolena Slycord in 1950 and they later divorced. He married Beverly Jean Roush December 27, 1976 and she preceded him in death June 14, 2018. Richard attended Wilson Country School and graduated from Eddyville High School. He worked for Iowa Valve for 20 years, John Deere Ottumwa Works, Ver Meer, the Foundry in Newton and for John Morrell and Co. While working full time, he farmed from 1960 to 1975. He earned a Machine Technology Certificate from Indian Hills Community College. He then worked for Lomont Molding in Mt. Pleasant and Jefferson County Hospital from where he retired. He also had worked for St. Joseph Hospital, Ottumwa Municipal Golf Course and had owned and operated His Hands Extended second hand store in Ottumwa. He had been a member of Oskaloosa Assembly of God for many years, serving on various church boards and building committees. As a Sunday School teacher, he led many people to the Lord, including 8 young men one Sunday morning. For the past 40 years he was a member of First Church of the Open Bible in Ottumwa where he was very active. Richard enjoyed mowing his yard in Agency. He and his wife, Beverly also enjoyed holding “pitch parties” at their home. Surviving are three sons, Daniel (Vic) Langstraat of Oskaloosa, Terry (Becky) Langstraat of Cedar and Tim (Becky) Langstraat of Oskaloosa; children by marriage, Mike Wells of Hayesville, Deb Wharton of Batavia and Allen Wells of Martinsburg; 13 grandchildren, Amy, David, Dustin, Lisa, Jack, Ryan, Cody, Ryan, Brad, Chad, Aaron, Lisa and Jeremy; 30 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; a sister, Ruth Hayes of Springfield, MO; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Travis; a great granddaughter, Alexia Lynn; son-in-law, Jedd Wharton; brother-in-law, Otto Hayes; a niece and a nephew. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastors Mark Hornback and Bill Hornback officiating. Burial will be in Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The family will be present one hour prior to the service to greet friends. Memorials may be made to First Church of the Open Bible or Good Samaritan Society – Hospice.
