He was born Nov. 18, 1947 in Carroll, Iowa to Raymond and Ferne (Wheeler) Johnson. He married Julie Konradi on Aug. 30, 1968, in Ames, Iowa. He received his bachelor's degree in agricultural education and his master's degree in agronomy from Iowa State University and his doctorate in plant physiology from the University of Minnestoa. He was employed at Deere & Comapny since 1980 and most recently was a Senior Principal Scientist at the Deere & Company Technical Center. He also led Deere's Agronomy Group and managed Deere's outside sponsored research programs in agriculture. Before that, he conducted research and taught crop production at the University of Illinois. He was a coauthor of the book "Modern Corn and Soybean Production" with three former colleagues at the University of Illinois. While a member of the Army Reserves, he received the Army Commendation Medal. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Moline, where he served on the Administrative Board. He was a Fellow of both the American Society of Agronomy and the Crop Science Society, and was active on committees of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers, the Industry Research Institute and the National Corn Growers Association. He served on the editorial boards for the Agronomy Journal, Crop Science, Crop and Soils Magazine and the Journal of Production Agriculture. Dr. Johnson enjoyed many outdoor activities. He was an avid runner and also enjoyed rock climbing, skiing and gardening. Memorials may be made to the church or the Melanoma Research Program at the University of Wisconsin. He is survived by his wife, Julie; sons, Tom and Brian, both of Davenport; and his stepmother, Mary Johnson, Odebolt. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Sharon Megby. -------------------------
