Description	:	Richard Ryder Graves, 80, died peacefully at his home in Fork Union, Virginia, on Friday, November 18, 2011. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on January 8, 1931, he moved with his parents, Robert Strickler Graves and Annabel Dye Graves, to Syria, Virginia, in the early 1940's. He graduated from Lane High School in 1950, and from Virginia Polytechnic Institute with a BS degree in Agriculture - Class of 1954. Read More	Richard Ryder Graves, 80, died peacefully at his home in Fork Union, Virginia, on Friday, November 18, 2011. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on January 8, 1931, he moved with his parents, Robert Strickler Graves and Annabel Dye Graves, to Syria, Virginia, in the early 1940's. He graduated from Lane High School in 1950, and from Virginia Polytechnic Institute with a BS degree in Agriculture - Class of 1954. He also served in the United States Army Armed Forces Special Weapons Project Division. Following graduation and after his military service, he returned to Madison County and was employed by RS Graves & Brothers, Inc. In 1964, he moved to Fork Union and established Hill Grove Worm Ranch and later Cinderella Potting Soil. Active in community and state life, Richard was a member of ACCA Temple Shrine, the Board of Directors of the State Fair, and the Fluvanna and Region 10 Planning Commissions. Additionally, he was a director emeritus of the Board of Trustees of Fork Union Military Academy. He was formerly married to Selma Graves of Richmond, Virginia, and was predeceased by their daughter, Martha Diane Graves. Richard was also predeceased by three brothers, Robert S. Graves Jr., Thomas I. Graves, and William M. Graves. Richard is survived by his niece, Anne Graves Foster. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, December 10, 2011, at Hebron Lutheran Church in Madison, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace & Glory Lutheran Church, 96 Garden Lane, Palmyra, VA 22963; Lake Monticello Rescue Squad, 14 Slice Road, Palmyra, VA 22963; or Fork Union Military Academy, 4744 James Madison Highway, Fork Union, VA 23055.
