Skillman and Richard Sampson. On Monday afternoon of this week the remains of the last named member of the party were laid to rest in the north cemetery. Of the other members of the party, Abe Skillman died several years ago, while Thos. Skillman, since the death of his wife, has made his home with his son at Pleasanton, Nebr. Mr. Durland now lives at Seattle, Wash., while Mr. and Mrs. Roberts still live in Seward. The trip to Nebraska was made in four covered wagons. They crossed the Mississippi river at Quincy, Ill., then slowly wended their way through Iowa, crossing into Nebraska at Nebraska City. From there they came direct to Seward county, where they entered homesteads, and here Mr. Sampson lived until his death, which occurred in a hospital in Lincoln Saturday where he had gone for treatment. The remains were brought back to Seward Sunday morning and taken to the home on the old homestead, just northwest of town. Mr. Sampson was born in Knox county, Ill., May 11, 1839, where he spent his young manhood and wasmarried to Miss Mary C. Roberts Aug. 25, 1859. She died here in 1870. Ten years later he was married to Miss Sarah J. Carey, who survives him. When Mr. Sampson first settled here there were but few settlers in the entire county, it being considered at that time a part of the great American desert and therefore practically worthless. But he lived to see it developed from an Indian haunt and buffalo range into one of the finest agricultural regions in the entire United States, although, like all those early pioneers, many hardships and privations were endured. Of the settlers in the county who were here when Mr. Sampson first came it is said there are but two still living, E. L. Ellis, who entered a homestead in 1860, and J. T. Reynolds, who settled in J precinct in the fall of 1863. The log house Mr. Sampson built when he first came here still stands, although it has long since been abandoned for residence purposes The nearest trading point at that time was Nebraska City. Dick Sampson was a good citizen and a loyal friend and neighbor. He always took an active interest in political affairs, having associated with the democratic party. During the last two sessions of the legislature he served as assistant postmaster in the house of representatives. He had also served the people of his precinct by filling different offices in years past. There lives to mourn the death of this pioneer two children, Clem of Seattle, Wash., and Mrs. Barkley Hickman of Seward, whose mother died in 1870, and six children, Mrs. Sadie M. Souders, of Seward, Mrs. Helen C. Cocklin, of Lincoln, Mrs. Bessie E. Dillingham, of Minneapolis, Mrs. Margaret L. Manning of David City, John A. and Herbert M. of Seward, whose mother lives to share their sorrow. Funeral services were held 2:30 Monday afternoon at the home, the address being delivered by F. G. Simmons. Many beautiful floral offerings were in evidence. The remains were laid to rest in the family lot in the north cemetery. The pallbearers were Geo. W. Fuller, O. E. Bernecker, Joel Tishue, L.
